His beginnings in swimmin

He began his swimming career in the swimming pools of Parque Miranda until he was 14 years old and then at the Santiago de Leon School in Caracas. He began to represent Venezuela in regional competitions since 1978; and two years later he began his participation in the XXV South American Open Swimming Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he won a gold medal and a silver medal; then continued in different events, including the Latin American Cup in Madrid, Spain (1980); Also with just 14 years old, he was in the Moscow Olympic Games, culminating in the 14th position in the 200 meters butterfly. The South American Swimming Championship in Medellin, Colombia (1981), where he won two gold medals; the Central American Age Group Swimming Championship in Oaxtepec, Mexico, where he won two gold medals; the IX Bolivarian Games in Barquisimeto, Lara State, where he won six gold medals and two silver medals; the XIV Central American Games in Havana, Cuba (1982), where he won six gold medals; the IX Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela (1983), where he won five bronze medals.

His career in Olympic swimming

At the age of 14 he was in the Olympic Games in Moscow, finishing 14th in the 200m butterfly, but that would not discourage him and on the contrary he continued working harder until his big moment arrived: The Olympic Games in Los Angeles 1984, which he would face with the greatest illusion because he had promised a medal to his father who was sick with cancer. With this perspective, the long-awaited day and the moment of the competition arrived:

List of participants per lane

The big favorite of the race was the Olympic Champion and 100m gold medalist, Germany's Michael Gross in lane 4.

Carril Nombre País
1 Peter Ward Canadá
2 Anthony Mosse Nueva Zelanda
3 Pablo Morales Estados Unidos
4 Michael Gross Alemania Occidental
5 Rafael Vidal Venezuela
6 Jon Sieben Australia
7 Ton Ponting Canadá
8 Patrick Kennedy Estados Unidos

The competitors are placed in their respective lanes and the adrenaline rises, breathing stops and... The start is given... which is quite even. Michael Gross slightly ahead, followed by Pablo Morales and Rafael Vidal... So they go through the first 50m pool; they turn the second pool and Gross continues ahead, but Vidal is already second, Morales third and Siegen fourth a little further behind, the first 3 are very close together and the competition is excitingly even between them ... no one takes off, they go head to head. . none is detached, they go head to head, stroke by stroke; They turn the last pool towards the finish line, it is the time of the final finish, of mental strength and Gross in the lead with Morales and Vidal fighting for second place and Siegen cutting distance. The others don't count. 30 meters to go and the positions are narrowing between the first 4 swimmers. Friends what a thrill, I relive the race and it seems as if it were today!
Last 20m and still Gross ahead with Morales and Vidal very close ... and Siegen attacking hard from lane 6 ... Gross is maintained but Vidal and Siegen squeezing, tremendous end friends, Siegen matching, Gross, Vidal and Morales throwing the rest ... Last stroke and Siegen touches first, second Gross and third Vidal
¡¡¡¡

Friends, I was jumping and leaping and the Venevision march (which announces the great feats of Venezuelans) gave greater excitement to the moment when the Venezuelan Rafal Vidal won the bronze medal for the first time in the Olympic history of Venezuelan swimming... To this day, no other Venezuelan has achieved it.

Order of arrival

Here I share with you the order of finish and the times used by each of the competitors where you can corroborate how tight the finish was.

Rango Carril Nombre País Tiempo
1 6 Jon Sieben Australia 1:57:04
2 4 Michael Gross Alemania Occ. 1:57:40
3 5 Rafael Vidal Venezuela 1:57:51
4 3 Pablo Morales Estados Unidos 1:57:75
5 2 Anthony Mosse Nueva Zelanda 1:58:75
6 7 Ton Ponting Canadá 1:59:37
7 1 Peter Ward Canadá 2:00:39
8 8 Patrick Kennedy Estados Unidos 2:01:03

As you have been able to appreciate in this humble quasi narration that describes the details of the competition, Rafael Vidal, against all odds, obtained the bronze medal just 50 thousandths of a second behind the first place, that is, friends, by a finger's breadth and worth the comparison. In this way, he becomes the first Venezuelan to win a medal in swimming in the history of the Olympic Games, but the most striking thing is how he achieved this medal. My friends, he was a far cry from winning the gold or silver medal, 5 meters more and surely the medal would have been of a different color.

Why does the feat achieved by Vidal stand out to me?

The feat marks me precisely because of the difficulty of the context: first because Michael Gross was the great champion and swimming star of the Olympics in question, with several medals already won in those games and second because Venezuela boasted of the quality of its boxers and basically had no tradition in the aquatic specialty. Vidal and Mestre were the Olympic pioneers in this discipline.

Certainly, there are other historic moments of Venezuelans in the Olympics, such as the gold medals of Morochito Rodriguez in boxing, or Ruben Limardo in fencing, among others, but I'm left with the heroic joust of Rafael Vidal, because of the way it happened: He was inches away from winning the gold and the last 50 meters were legendary in a head to head, stroke by stroke between Australian John Sieben (Gold), German Olympic champion Michael Gros (Silver), Vidal himself (bronze) and Pablo Morales (fourth).

Vidal's feat will remain in my memory and in that of the millions of Venezuelans who supported him, since only a few hundredths of a second separated him from a feat of greater historical weight. Although it may not be obvious to the naked eye, Vidal's achievement is even more extraordinary. Being from a Caribbean country, he was among the greatest, so much so that two Olympics later his bronze time is faster than those who won gold in 1988 and 1992. In addition, Rafa's medal is the only one in the 200 butterfly in Latin America since the event began in 1956.

At that moment an idol was born in Venezuelan swimming, but not only for the lovers of the aquatic sport, but in the whole Venezuelan sports world. His legacy? From that moment on, the practice of swimming in Venezuela had a very important boom, causing dozens of children and young people to turn to practice this discipline, thus originating a very important relay generation that eventually bore fruit in young swimmers like Albert Subirats, Francisco Sanchez, Andreina Pinto, Cristian Quintero, Carlos Claverie, who in subsequent years represented us with honors in various international competitions.

Once retired, he became a sports commentator for RCTV and worked at the Regional Sports Institute of Miranda State. Years later, he advised athletes and business executives in the area of self-esteem and management and edited the book, "Los Sellos Secretos" which he began writing when he was 12 years old.

Another important legacy, although not a sporting one, is referred to by the well-known sports commentator "El Profesor" Robert Rodríguez in his book Biografías: "Rafael discovered that interest in knowledge and in sharing what he could acquire through his studies and his dedication. He understood very well that the human being matures and he could not continue being a swimmer all his life or dedicate himself to being a swimming coach. That is why he wrote that book and had that ascent for that spiritual quest."

The swimmer and sports commentator Rafael Antonio Vidal Castro died in his native Caracas, on February 12, 2005, in a traffic accident in the municipality of El Hatillo, after being hit in a collision by driver Roberto Detto. The context surrounding Vidal's death caused much anger and frustration in the Venezuelan community, since it seems that the driver of the other vehicle at that time was participating in a clandestine race from the Caracas localities of La Trinidad to El Hatillo.

Thus ends my appointment with the Olympic sports history, in which with pride and dedication I have tried to relive the feat of the hero and protagonist of my best Olympic moment: The bronze medal won by Rafael Vidal in the Los Angeles Olympics 1984.

Thank you very much for reading my lines and I hope I have complied with all the required guidelines and, of course, that it is to the liking of all this beautiful sports community.

Until a new opportunity
