Hello friends, April is almost here and specifically on the 15th of that month Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson, it is worth reminding you that the number 42 is the only number retired in the big leagues of all teams but .....

Mariano Rivera was the last player to wear this number, but why was he already retired? Many say it was because Rivera himself asked for it and in reality it never happened, the truth is that he never asked for the number, they just gave it to him and being just a young man without any knowledge about statistics or baseball history he did not give it importance until 1996 when he has an amazing performance in the season wearing that number, for the year 1997 the MLB declared April 15 as Jackie Robinson day and ordered that all the numbers 42 were retired from the teams, however Mariano Rivera continued using it until 2013 in his retirement.

It was not only Rivera who used this number, after Robinson's retirement and his induction into the baseball hall of fame, it was used many times, even Reggie Jackson was presented with the number 42 at the press conference in December 1976 when he was acquired by the New York Yankees although he later asked to use the 44 in honor of Hank Aaron who had retired from baseball in 1972.

I invite you to watch the video in which I talk about why Rivera wore it until 2013 and tell you some anecdotes behind the famous number 42.

Thanks for your visit.
