My FungiFriday Report Card: September 4 2020

It's Friday.

I found some fungi in the forest and I didn't forget to bring my bag of googly eyes... allthough... apparently I didn't really think this through, so there's no googly fungus today. Maybe next week.

I took a little hike into the woods, back along and beyond the route of yesterday's walk. I told you I'd try to be back with some eyes today, but I'll save that for later. Let's start with the #fungifriday pictures first.

I noticed this little mushroom by the wayside. It's of the scleroderma citrinum kind, also known as a socalled pigskin poison puffball. But... I guess usually it's just being called the common earthball, which makes it sound kind of boring, though.

Either way, where there's one there's many, because that's how mushrooms do. And so I found another one neatly tucked into the side of a lovely mossy tree stump.

And then I found another one, a particularly big one, coming with its own little entourage.

At first glance one might think those are multiple bulbs of the same kind. A big pigskin poison puffball with little common earthball offspring? But it's s not. It's more peculiar than that!

There's fungus growing on that fungus. It's a pseudoboletus parasiticus, a parasitic bolete, it only grows on earthballs and unlike it's host, it's actually edible, albeit of bad quality. According to the internet it's a rather rare find.

I didn't know any of this before stretching my google-fu after returning from the hike, so it has been a very educational #fungifriday for me! Awesome!

After all those fungus facts, its time to hallucinate and get some googly entertainment. Here's yesterday's inanimate imaginary friend, finally finished and googlyfied.
