Fatass Journal... 2021#174 - June 23 - Z Vieux-Reng do Sambre

[ENG] I cannot explain it logically, but lately I have been attracted by the Sambra - a river that starts near Cartignies in France and meanders like a snake along its 190 km length, to flow into the Meuse at Namur. Along the Belgian part of the river, there are wide paths on which you can cycle comfortably. This is the Belgian section of EuroVelo 3, or Pilgrims route - over 5300 km of cycling from Norway to Santiago de Compostela. I would probably be most happy to cycle this route (along the Sambra), but I also enjoy hiking along its course, as I did yesterday.

Fort ten, będący sceną zaciętych i heroicznych walk, został zrównany z ziemią w 1914 roku, w okresie międzywojennym został odbudowany i stanowił najpotężniejszym punkt obrony w pasie otaczającym Maubeuge.

[ENG] I drove by car about 20km south of Mons to Grand-Reng, a Belgian village on the border, and actually to Lameries on the French side, from where I set off towards the river. In the church of St. Cyriac the Roman there is a stained glass window depicting St. Roch carrying a scallop shell, in memory of those making the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, meaning we were making the pilgrimage yesterday with @merthin in the same direction :). I found this route on Wikiloc.com, easy to navigate, it led mainly between the surrounding fields. Next to my route was Fort Boussois, which is not accessible for civilians, terrain belongs to the French army and every few meters there are signs saying that access is forbidden. The fort, the scene of fierce and heroic battles, was razed to the ground in 1914, rebuilt between the wars and became the most powerful defensive point in the belt surrounding Maubeuge. In May 1940 its crew put up fierce resistance to the German army for almost a week. Today the bunkers are in ruins hidden somewhere in bushes and are not open to the public.

[ENG] Finally I reached the river, walking along the cycle path, actually a former towpath, I had the river on my right and wetlands on my left. In several places platforms have been built for wildlife watching, according to the descriptions, there are morays, herons and kingfishers among others. When I reached Marpent, I had to say goodbye to the river, my further route led north. On a hill, about 500 metres from the river is the oldest windmill in the region dating back to 1789. Built of bluestone rubble, this cylindrical mill rises 14 metres high on the left bank of the Sambre River. The wings have a rare feature north of Paris, they are Berton type wings (wings of the Vendée mills), they were also used to transmit information, finally stopped around 1877. In the early 21st century, a group of local enthusiasts decided to save it, the mill is open to the public and they still grind grain into flour. The rest of the route back led again among the fields. I will probably return there soon.
