Five orchid day: Actifit Report Card: September 12 2021

A clear blue sky day with a high forecast of 28C. My walk yesterday was horrid with too many people on a weekend stroll on tracks that cannot support the numbers. The new weekend plan is to walk where people will not go

I cycled down - put on a hat for a hot day and boots for snakes and headed down under the powerlines. I had seen sun orchids last time budding and hoped to find them

A challenge on a very windy day to get this grevillea to stand still. There is a path for a while and then it became bundu bashing (bundu is an African word for bush)

My army training helped - follow the contours when the path dies. Up above was a rock ledge line that the old timers had used to run the water pipe - follow that

I kept following the powerlines until I could see the water of Cowan Creek.

I decided not to walk down and up - not found an orchid yet. The two sun orchids I saw last week were not evident. They have long steps and get smashed on windy days. I took the photo of the water and cut left to make my way to the track

Right there was a bearded orchid colony

Flower will be open soon - plant was a bit dry. I watered it and hoping Monday rain does its work. I walked back on the track hoping to find bearded orchids open.

I saw this orchid gone to seed. That had me looking around for mates - there is always a colony

This leaf was a target for my walk. I was hoping it was a flying duck orchid - nope. But this is why I take photos and write stuff up. I can find them again.

A new find with a splash of pink - thelymitra carnea. They open on warm sunny days.

Track side view of two bearded orchids. The one closest to bidding from last week has gone. I checked the track twice over

And not 20 metres from my bike park I saw this orchid. I missed it on the way out as I headed straight out under the powerlines.

Caladenia carnea - pretty sure this is a first time sighting on this track. I have seen C catenata close by.

Yep - that is my bike ringed and the flash of blue are sun orchids.

It turned into a 5 orchid day. I missed out on the 3 spots I was hoping to find open flowers. The last 20 meters produced two one of which I was not expecting. A bonus walk and I did escape the people under the powerlines.

I must say I did enjoy a quiet slice of bush with no people for the powerline slice and only a few on the track back. Tomorrow - will see if I can find those little pink sun orchids on a different track.

I did some garden tidy up when Ingot back. Mynwife had been trimming stuff. I did the shredding and the tidy up after the man who came to dig up some agapanthus my wife gave away.
