6 orchid day: Actifit Report Card: September 13 2021

Had a shocker of a night waking at 5 with 4 hours sleep. Dreams were all over the shop. Was a clear blue sky morning with rain forecast for the afternoon. Kicked around a few ideas - shop first - unpack - walk vs walk first and shop next. Logic prevailed and I did the walk while I was sure it would stay dry. Shopping works come rain or shine.

Plan was to walk Wahroonga side of Ku-ring Gai Chase NP to check on flying duck orchids and chance of pink sun orchids a friend told me might be open. I focused in on the early part of the track. I saw a seed head and then behind was a fairy orchid

Caladenia alata side on with the distinctive yellow teeth either side of the labellum

I followed my own advice and checked the opposite edges of the truck turnout to last time. Bingo. A colony of glossodia minor - small waxlip orchids. Light was just perfect.

Milkmaids are making an appearance - great light for a cluster photo. I was looking hard for the flying duck orchids and not doing well. Had to double back.

These at the far end of the track before the drop off have some time to go. Time to track back and find the ones on the other side. Did better here.

One not far off ready and a comfortable two metres off the track. A little further on one ready for later today

Why the two metres in as safe? NPWS vehicle came along and told me there was a ride on mower working the track. I was keen to walk back to the top and double back to find the flying duck orchids I saw last time - before mower man.

We did meet where the orchid was. He was not going to engage in conversation.

This photo triggers a story from my last walk here. One of the walkers showed me where the flying duck orchids at the end of the track were. She said the ranger had shown her. Now the picture above is a log placed in the track where the orchids are. Seems like NPWS lady was marking off places not to mow. Mower man knew to mow around - I will find out soon enough. I doubt we will see the pink sun orchids- they will be just emerging where the mower went.

A new flower open - caleana major.

Front on photo with a focal point right inside the flower. I walked on the track that goes along to to Kalkari side to see if bearded orchids are open

Red beard orchid - calochilus paludosus - first for the season and new for this track

Close up. The other day I photographed a weevill chomping an orchid leaf. Another one.

This one was chomping a bearded orchid leaf. I relocated said beetle as the plant was still making its play.

Bearded orchid unfurling. With the tape emerging I can say this is not paludosus - I am going to guess robertsonii based on size of flower.

The view across Cockle Creek toward Asquith side. Tomorrow I will walk that side.

Not far from the main trail was this sun orchid. It was not warm enough to be open. In all a good walk - 6 orchids in flower though 2 not fully.

Headed straight to shops - too bad if the walking makes the body smell a bit. A little distance helps. I normally like shopping but all the mask bullshit is getting to me. I hate doing the once a week shop. Everyone seems so precious - me too.

Dinner: My wife cooked Mongolian beef - yum. So nice to have an evening off. I did do the rice and veges.

Trade action: Market stepped up a bit and I stayed out. Did short AUDNZD and bought GALA altcoin on its Binance listing. My friend runs a bunch of Gala nodes which seem to be doing well. I dllwed the idea for $100 worth
