Road trip to Central Tablelands : March 23 2023

avatar
(Edited)

Got a cycling weekend away planned. Heading onto the Central Tablelands to Cowra - 310 kms to drive. Had got a little organised overnight. Most stuff done in the morning. We left just before 11 am - just short of 3 hours to get to Bathurst for a lunch stop

We missed the turnoff for our normal stop next to the creek. No problem we will use the next one and eat at that table under the trees

We walked over - table and chairs are covered in bat shit. We did the car boot lunch. 100 kms to go to Cowra - road is a little narrow and it started to rain. Got checked in at our cabin just after 3pm - rain was clearing away

Caravan park is right on the Lachlan River and a good 10 metres above the river. When the big floods came all but two of the cabins were damaged. Got a call from the park - the bike group have moved to the other park, do you want to keep your booking as your cabin is fine? Yep - you donated my last camping fee to charity and we can walk to town

Hard to believe the river came over the bridge

Looking north - imagine that 10 metres higher and the noise

Still deciding on landscape vs portrait

Photo of a rolled up hay bale - going to guess those weigh 300 kgs - floated like a cotton reel with the plastic wrapping high in the trees.

Joined some of the crew for a drink at the camp kitchen. We went to pub for dinner. Pub was busy - good to see that on a Thursday night in the country. Huge portions. Night off cooking is a bonus

Oh hey there. Didn't expect to come across another Aussie when looking through "Created" for new content. :) I'm down in Adelaide. Those floods you guys had up your way were pretty intense. Hopefully things dry out and you get an (appropriate) level of rainfall in the seasons to come.

The weather world is on its head. Doubt it has anything to do with climate change. I battled around the Murray river floods in October. The Darling has not flooded like this in 50 years.

Over new year, I drove from Adelaide to Melbourne and back. Over Murray Bridge (a literal bridge, and a town, called the same thing) - we could see the Levee when heading to Melbourne. On the way back, about 8 days later, there was no Levee visible, and the water level was substantially higher.

Nature does some crazy, irrational things that we just cannot fathom.

That floodwater made me change my tour plans around Euroa in October. Took two months for the flood waters to travel 800 kms to Murray Bridge

Hopefully some water can stay in the river system longer term. It will certainly be healthy for the eco system.

This creek flows West to the Darling/Murray Basin - will take 6 months to reach the sea. Adding 53% capacity is bad for downstream for years and years.
