Berry Island walk on Sydney Harbour : September 4 2025
Wake to a grey sky day. There were flashes of blue out toward the mountains. Took a while to get motivated - looked up the weather maps - forecast is for a dry day. With 7 Bridges Walk coming up have been studying parts of that I might cover - so looking South to the harbour.

Caught the train to Wollstonecraft with a view to walking a loop around Berry Island

Found a path to access Berry Creek trail which heads down to the island

Path has a ribbon of bush - hakea flower framing the track

Garden escapee - friesia - spring is here

Pea flower in deep purple

Bush in the middle of the city. The hand written note made me chuckle - no geocache here - tells me there was one once

Path went across a high bridge over the creek - photo of a noisy miner below me with the creek below

Staghorn fern also up high - creek below

Walked down to the creek to walk along the creek till the water - all rainforest and all suffering from too much fertiliser

Lots of ferns

Steep sandstone

View down the creek

Old style wooden house - built on a steel frame - looked empty

The start of a staghorn fern

View across the water to the Grenwich oil terminal. When we first came to Sydney we looked at a house just above the terminal with views to the city. As it happens, the principal of the local school would not take our kids. Life would have shaped differently if we had started here

Oil tanker sight

A smaller bulker

The area was an important Aboriginal area - all pushed away by the settlers

Stone art work. Looks like a large creature consumed a smaller one - nobody knows

Next photo shows a fresh water pool and a boomerang carved in the rock

Where are we photo? Now to walk Berry Island

More angles on the bigger tanker

Epacris longiflora

Lomandra still flowering

View taking in both pylons of the Anzac Bridge and the church tower on the right

And then opens out views to the city - Crown Casino in Barangaroo

View to the city over Darling Harbour. The W is at the top of the harbour

The whole of the oil tanker

View to North Sydney across the top of HMAS Waterhen

Swinging south a bit for a view of the city over Balls Head Reserve and the old coal loader terminal

Last loop of the walk through Badangi Reserve up to Bridge End. A mix of dry forest and rain forest

Signage took a while to work out. Not all obvious - did land up in the mangroves once

Did study the bottom of every red gum. The bootlace orchids like those as a host - and have seen them not far away in Balls Head Reserve - no luck

Just missed a train

Perfect place to wait and eat my sandwich lunch - love the old style station sign
Always good to be a tourist in one's home town especially with the great harbour views
Dinner: Fried Rice

That walk around Berry Island sounds so peaceful! I love how it mixes nature, history, and calm moments right in the middle of the city. A cloudy day makes it even more special and memorable.

When the weather is pleasant like this, it feels so relaxing to walk a lot and I feel like walking more. It feels good to see all the beautiful views.
