Lane Cove NP ride - walk - white flower day : October 23 2025

Got a little busy for a train-bike ride. Walked into town for a long needed haircut and a little shopping. The bougainvillea on the way reminds me of the house I lived in as a kid. We had a big one just this colour

Kept busy and headed out mid afternoon on the bike. Ride to an access to Lane Cove NP that I had not used before

Many bush access tracks have one of these bush fire trailers. They become a good marker for access tracks into the bush

Just off the access was this large rock platform. I could sense the spirits and did not need the cultural site sign to know. I did look for engravings - found this one

Nope. Not an engraving but a survey mark.

This looked like man-made work to get water to flow off the platform. The work looks chiselled rather than the smooth water flow you see lower down

Found a mulberry tree a good 100 metres from the houses. Fruit was yum and reminded me of a tree we had as kids in Johannesburg

The flannel flowers are out and set the theme for the flowers today

Slender rice flower

I know the shape of this flower - hemigenia - the leaves are wider than the narrow-leafed one I know

Walk is part of Great North Walk. Not a good access point for public transport to do a point to point walk

Walk passes through the Blue Hole cultural site - a few rock pools carved out by water flow over many many years.

The only blue was the reflection of the blue sky

Back to white flower theme

Just off the ground. First orchid sighting of the walk

A long seeded sun orchid - probably from the season before. The notable part is it is growing on a bed of she-oak needles. These are quite acidic and orchids do not like that

A little further on were some budding orchids also in the needles. The clue for ID and the reason for the side on photo - bonnet orchid - burgundy back to leaf

Green back to these leaves - tongue orchid also budding

Track passes under De Burghs Bridge. Decided to walk thst way and loop back and cross Ryde Road and come back to the track I was on from that side

Could see the angophora trees flowering across Rudder Creek. No sign of flowers on the trees above me - same tree

Back to the white flower theme

Back to signs. The idea was to walk to Ryde Road access - cross that road and get back. No luck as there is no pedestrain crossing at the traffic lights and traffic was busy. Choices - cross the bridge and use the cycleway. Done that before - a long way. Or walk up to the next lights - also a long way. Or just track back

4 columns of the bridge have quite new graffiti - took a while to work out the word - Churn. No shortage of dead spray cans around. Pretty sure this is not a pretty place when the work is being done

Lizard action going back across Blue Hole - it posed

Next of the flower theme - a slightly different leptospermum

Back to the signs - would be good to know that you cannot cross the main road other than under the bridge

Ride done - a few personal records - only because one road is newly ridden. Have done part of the west one going from the other side

Had a friend come over for dinner - did eye fillet and boerewors on the BBQ. No photos

A late night doing a fee trades.
