Up and down tree shots on Comerong Island : January 2 2026

Change for the day. We were going back to Sydney. My wife suggested we stay another day as it was a blue sky day. I like that idea - I like life by the seaside

Tried for a while to think about new approaches for my internet marketing stuff. Have a big book of ideas to guide me along. Truth is my stuff is so far behind. Will take a complete reset to get this to work. Went out late on the bike to walk Comerong Island.

Ride down to the river mouth access. Always a view back to Coolangatta Mountain - lots of timber on the edges from the last floods. I thought a lot had been cleared - clearly not enough

A bit further around from flathead corner - need a high tide to catch fish here. Good news is I can walk across the river mouth on firmish sand

Follow the footprints and enjoy the little terns who summer here - at least 10 in the photo

Edge of the mangroves and a few little terns - just a few of both

View back to the mountain across fallen tree - good colours

Black oystercatcher between the nesting area and the water - only one I saw

Not want I expected to see - 6 sacred ibis on a log next to the water. Normally seen in the farm areas in the floodplain

A new flower - creeping brookweed - weed might be the word

A cocoon arranged to a fallen leaf - spider or moth or butterfly?

2nd time seeing this in the last week or so. Like a leaf curling spider but curling a grass leaf. Smaller than a leaf curling spider

Not a lot of action for orchids on the ground. It is an autumn and winter place. Best look up to the grand trees - all have very distinctive red ribbed bark

Like this - canopy is 8 to 10 metres above and trunk is more than a metre around

A touch of blue above. The twists of the trunks are amazing. Probably started like that closer to the ground to clear the bush below

Like this

A twist below

And soaring tall above

Australian native violet - first for the day for my granddaughter Violette

Back to photographing grass seeds - makes good topic and hard to photograph

Turned back after walking further down the track than previous times. In time I will bring a car and then walk the whole length of the island. Saves the 20 minutes it takes to get to the start of the walk

Saw this touch of green up a trunk - about 2 metres above ground. It is a staghorn

And another a little higher

And up high another 5 metres up - a full grown version. It is amazing to see what one finds when one stops to look

This is one of the few remaining littoral rainforests left - get the atmosphere - the sound of the sea, crickets and no people

Stopped to check a skink - too quick for a photo but there were these golden mushrooms - the only ones seen today

Close up

Spied this unfolding form on a runner on the ground - new leaves

Context photo - chopped off the Covid aware warning - that time is gone - get rid of the signs. In all my time walking this track I have never met another walker. A few vehicles

Walked down to the beach - a few kids swimming and a log hut

Looking south to Crookhaven Heads

Looking north to Gerroa

View back across the beach to Coolangatta Mountain. Was clouded enough to make the walk in open quite cool

Did see a few blue bottles - always a problem on open beaches in the summer ' found 3 quite close together

One more shot of Coolangatta Mountain on the way back. Mood felt different but the evidence says not much

I do enjoy easy access to the water and the bush by bike. A simple little loop and can safely leave the bike standing while I walk. There are not of orchid sightings recorded on Comerong Island. I aim to change that - only because I walk it more than most. There is one I am orchid to find here. One day

Dinner: simple BBQ
