First midge orchid for 2026 in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP: January 12 2026

Got the 2nd grey day in a row. After the struggles the day before with my new IM project I was not very motivated.

Finishing last week's investing accounts did help - when the portfolio goes up 3 times more than the S&P 500 in a week - celebrate.

Got in the car to walk an often walked track in Ku-ring Gai Chase NP - almanac was telling me there could be midge orchids and the endangered cryptostylis hunteriana. Did need an umbrella - first photo sets the theme - raindrop flowers. Pine-leafed geebung

No midge orchids in last year spot - been smashed by the track work done during the winter - 4 plants last time - none now. Did find one flowering in the next normal spot - fringed midge orchid - corunastylis fimbriatus. Just one flower - bashed by the heat and the rain

This one has probably been around more than two days

Back to raindrops flowers - pea flower

Under the powerlines on a bleak rainy umbrella day

A flash of pink - eriostemon flower down low

A bedraggled purple fringe lily - rain plays havoc with the fringed bits

A wide spreading scribbly gum - not often does one see one with equally balanced branches going out both sides - normally lean one way

Going to be a few seasons before we see flowers on this cymbidium suave. As this is on a main walking track and easy to see, I fully expect someone will knick it

Teardrop flower (my name) with a raindrop - only saw one flower the whole walk

Got the steps in. Got a first midge orchid for the season. Was good to be out
