Foster to Port Welshpool rail trail ride - meadow flowers day : March 20 2026

avatar

Today, we ride East down Great Southern Rail Trail from Foster. Ride as far as you feel good and turn back. My legs are tired after more than a week riding every day - going to Port Welshpool and then turning back

One of the few stations that still has buildings standing and a platform

Mushroom trail action again

Reflection time at the first creek crossing

A better reflection shot showing top of reflection and subject

Biggest mushroom I have seen - two side plates in size

Windmills up high - good news is we do not have to cycle up and over today

Coffee stop in Toora - a few old buildings standing - this one been painted

Old style corner building now a bargain store

Interesting style house with a dominant arch

Going to guess this was an old warehouse building now a delicatessan

Fabulous country mural

Corner pub under renovation

This station still has a platform but no buildings. Am going to guess this line was mainly freight with limited passenger facilities. No need for grand station buildings

Cloudy grey day we started with opening up with a bit more blue offering better photo chances of Wilsons Prom

A bit of framing for this shot from pretty much the same spot. Funnily enough a little while later I was talking about photo framing - more later

Spied a few meadow flowers after one of the trail gates - becomes the theme for the day all found in 200 metres of riding

Seen a lot of these yellow daisy type flowers. This one had a bug attending

A touch of pink. I do not know enough to say which are native and which are rogue

A bit like one of those delicate Japanese lanterns

Looks a bit like pale flax lily I am used to - probably a relative. A bit further along passed a touring cyclist. We started chatting - the young lady from Italy is cycling up the East Coast to Sunshine Coast to finish a journey that started from Cairns and stopped in Sunshine Coast

Spent an hour in Port Welshpool going through maps. I have cycled the entire route. I suggested a bunch of ferry legs to avoid big hills and high traffic areas and to keep close to the coast. Also line up accommodation for her in a few spots up the coast with friends

Selfie she took at the jetty was better than mine. On the route back to Welshpool we talked about photo techniques - rule of thirds and framing. She is heading east and I am going back west

A few shots from Port Welshpool - flowers in the jetty reserve

Jetty shot

View across the water to the Prom.

On the way back took the photo of this chimney stack not far from Toora station. No signage saying what it is (or was). No smoke belching to give clues. Judging by the colour of the blocky building it was/is a lime kiln.

South Gippsland is dairy country. This scene tickled me. The cows are walking up the road to be milked. The old girl at the back was notnkeen on walking. The tractor was encouraging her. Beep beep goes the reverse signal so tractor can get behind the cow. The rest are waiting patiently up the road

Last creek crossing before getting back to Foster

Rode a bit harder back - mostly a gentle grade down. My friend made two towns further to reach Yarram for the night

Did shopping in town for two nights. Cooked dinner in the camp kitchen, had a few drinks and a chat before driving back to my cottage. Tomorrow's ride comes past my cottage and back the same way. Will make for a shorter ride tomorrow
