There are 1000s of Flying Foxes here!

Firstly, I don't know what's up with my step counter on here. When I first joined the app it was struggling to record even half of what my watch was showing.

Then I clicked some suggestions buttons to sync other apps to this and suddenly Actifit is showing DOUBLE what my watch recorded.

I'm 100% happy to fix is anyone has come across this before and can point me in the right direction. Going under was annoying but tolerable. Going over, especially over by so much feels like cheating!

And since I'm a rather honest person (and I like it that way) I'd really prefer to fix this, I just have no clue how. Well thought out suggestions appreciated.

Now, onto the point of this post and that is to tell you about the incredible walk to the beach we had this afternoon!!

We've begun a long road trip and we made it south to Woolgoogla, or as the locals call it, Woopi.

We snagged a last minute spot in a cabin, in a caravan park and it's DELIGHTFUL. I'm watching birds fly overhead. I can hear the waves from the ocean beach nearby.

And it turns out there is a colony of flying foxes RIGHT at the edge of this property!

I knew flying foxes (which look a lot like big bats, but eat fruit instead of insects) congregated in large numbers, but as we walked the overgrown path to the beach, I was reminded just how large a colony can be.

There was no point in counting; literally every tree in one very large area had an average of 30 flying foxes. Some big trees looked like they were easily supporting double that.

We walked under one tree after another, after another that had so many flying foxes I didn't know where to look!

They head out to feed around sunset, coming home again just before the sunrises. And during the day they oscillate between resting, preening, sleeping, cooling themselves down by flapping their wings and squabbling with their neighbours.

All.while hanging upside down!

They're not threat to humans, but I would completely understand if a foreigner was visiting got scared!

Imagine getting no explanation that these darlings are harmless and seeing (literally) thousands of these creatures above your head, making all sorts of (adorable but very audible!) noises, and then seeing their very strong, long claws that they use to climb up and hang from trees...

You'd be forgiven for being afraid. But fear not, unless you plan to reincarnate as a peach or plum, you're safe!

Meanwhile, they make me so, so, so happy. I felt a genuine sense of wonder and awe when I saw them today. It was such a wonderful surprise 😊

Are there any animals that you have in your part of the world that you love this much? I'd love to know! Please tell me in a comment.
