Monday Musing
What kind of reputation does the organ have in mainstream society? If I were to have a guess, it would be uninspiring and boring hymn playing heard on Sundays. I would have to agree with what I just said because that’s all I ever knew. It took me the good first 20 years of my life to discover that organ repertoire existed and that organs could be played with grandeur. I suppose it didn’t help growing up in a smallish town but the suburban city areas can be quite the same. There is good organ playing out there—you just have to seek it. If I did nothing and became complacent, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
When I moved onto a new organ teacher it opened up more than just organ repertoire, but a whole community of like-minded people. Have a think about why you learned an instrument or a new piece—it’s because you had heard it done by someone else. That’s why it’s my ongoing passion to play the organ, to give it a voice so it can be heard. One day YOU might actually be the reason someone looks further into whatever you’re into. Forget talking about it to others, forget debating, forget arguing. Just do what you do best. Actions speak louder than words.
