My Actifit Report Card: May 30 2021

We were busy this morning with a walk and some yard work after breakfast. The ever present battle with Japanese knotweed continued.... this time close to home on the steep embankment to the north of our house. We are particularly vigilant knocking this patch back and interplanting regularly because if it is allowed to it will approach and potentially damage the old stone foundation of our 1800s farmhouse. We tackle this patch basically once a week! We have also covered the crest of the hill with ground cloth to deter it from sending rhizomes in that direction but it doesn't seem to care.

Here is a shot just after I started the mission for today.

And here is after I had rampaged across the hillside with my weapon of choice... a standard garden hoe. 👌 On this patch we have managed to plant and encourage many other species to begin repopulating the area so it requires more of a careful approach. I go through and break the new knotweed shoots- they are about 2-3 feet tall after a week of growth- back to ground level to allow the other plants to continue to grow... The garden hoe is a more precise tool for this to avoid damaging the sapling maples, willow, sumac, and lilac as well as raspberry, goldenrod, jewel weed, and groundcover such as dead nettle, clover, and wildflowers that we hope will eventually become prevalent. On other patches where we have been less successful interplanting I use a bush axe or machete.

The afternoon was rainy today so I have taken the opportunity to make several posts and look into setting up a hivelist store... all in all a productive day!
