Homemade donuts & Actifit Report Card: June 25 2022

Making homemade donuts like our mothers and grandmothers did when we were kids can easily fall into "Food memories from my childhood" category.
I'll just list the main ingredients, the quantities don't have to be exact except the flour/milk ratio has to be about 2 to 1, so for 250ml of milk, you'll be adding about 500grams of white flour.

So, as ingredients we'll have:

  • all-purpose white flour
  • milk
  • sugar
  • soft butter
  • yeast
  • eggs/egg yolks
  • salt
  • sunflower oil(or any oil that can handle high temps for deep-frying)

The hardest part is to prepare the dough where you have to mix together the flour with milk, sugar, yeast, eggs, butter, and some salt. A kitchen robot to do the work for you would be ideal, after a lot of mixing, you need to let the dough rest(covered) until it doubles in size. After that, you need to work the dough into a thin layer of about 10mm and then start cutting it into round shapes. You'll be using 2 cuts for each donut if you want to fill them with something(then you'll have to make the dough into a thinner layer), or just one cut for the plain ones, that's how I remember them.

After staking two dough cuts on top of another you need to slightly press the edges and then do another cut in a smaller size, cups or drinking glasses can be used to do the cutting.

When all this work has been completed, they need to rest for another 20-30 minutes to allow the dough to grow further. The more they grow in size, the softer and puffier they'll be.

Then, in a big pot(if you have a fryer it's even better) you need to get the oil to a high temperature, the level of oil should be high enough so the donuts can easily float on it. Now you can drop your donuts, preferably one by one, and not too many so they'll cook faster and they'll be easier to turn onto their uncooked side. The cooking time is not exact, observe their color and when they turn golden-brown, they should be just about done. Set your donuts on paper towels to remove excess oil, then sprinkle them with sugar powder.

Here is the easy part for some or the difficult part for others, how do you eat them? Plain, with milk, maybe add some chocolate sauce(usually if you have no filling)...just don't eat them when they are too hot so not to upset your stomach.

Many times I bought ready-made donuts from the shops, they're simply not the same, different taste, even different texture. The milk, butter, and eggs are essential in obtaining a good dough, and that's not only for donuts.

I'll put a couple of donuts on the side for @bradleyarrow not sure if he likes them filled with jam or just plain. HAPPY SUNDAY!

Well you could cut a portion from the middle and make them like classic donuts, but this way they get puffy and round :)
