Happy Thursday folks!

A person's shadow waving
Hi

It was another day shift for me today: Water Treatment Plant.

I rode my bike to and from.

Lots of walking, moving around the place, getting all the routine work done for the day. Discharged two filter presses in the afternoon. Made a timelapse sequence of that which I will upload and share once I edit it.

My work can be damn hard at times, but I enjoy it. Generally.

I enjoy it because most days there's a thing: a particular occurrence unique to that day. A new something, an unexpected event to prepare for, a change, a happening. There's always a bit going on and something in the works.

Today's thing was: preparing for the Desalination Plant to drain it's storage tanks into our storage tanks tomorrow. There's a lot of context here that I'm just going to gloss over but the important parts to know are:

  1. The city where I live has a Desalination Plant.

  2. The product water from that plant is piped to the Water Treatment Plant where I work.

  3. It is shandied (mixed) with the water produced by the WTP in massive underground storage tanks onsite, before network distribution to the city.

  4. There are meters onsite at the WTP that measure the quality of this incoming desalinated water. There is one meter each for reading fluoride residual, chlorine residual, turbidity and pH.

So today's thing was that these meters had to be switched on, the valves for the sample lines had to be opened and the readings from the meters had to be crosschecked in the lab to make sure they were reading accurately.

So I spent some time doing that.

The turbidity and fluoride meters needed small adjustments to their calibration, but they were all in pretty good shape considering they'd been offline for a few months.

So yeah, water treatment...

Back on the 3rd of August I wrote about the monthly rotation at my workplace.

Well, today is my last day stationed at the Sludge Dewatering Plant because I have 6 days off work starting from tomorrow. By the time I get back we'll be well and truly into September, meaning onto the next station...

🚂 choo choo!

...which is mysteriously referred to as Standby/Floater.

More on that later.

Flocculation Bay at a Water Treatment Plant

Here's a picture of a flocculation bay that we recentIy emptied for maintenance, with one of the flocculators and the timber baffle boards visible. The concrete basin is 6 metres deep.

See you!
