Meet my little friend! Actifit: September 6 2020

Today was filled with chores around the house and garden. I love a three-day weekend because I can sacrifice an entire day to house and garden work, have one day for other miscellaneous catch-up work and fun stuff, and still have a day left over!

I was so busy that I only have a few garden pictures to share. I have never seen a praying mantis in my garden before!

In fact I’m trying to remember if I have seen one up close. I was surprised by how big he actually was - about as long as my hand.

Here’s what he looks like head-on:

Well that is about all I have to share from my Sunday. I also had a vermillion hummingbird, but I couldn’t get a good picture.

Thank you for visiting!

Oh my gosh, really? Yeah... I guess eating bugs is really popular in some places. It hasn't quite caught on here!

Well, not all people eat insects! It’s kind of cultural practice for some local areas.

Great photos - great friend to have in the garden! Just when I start promoting entomophagy (eat bugs not cute little pigs and cows), I see a praying mantis, and that's one insect too cute to eat (and it's a protected species anyway). But I've heard the mantis has been known to eat hummingbirds. How can this be?? Even bullfrogs are guilty of this bird-icide. Nature is indeed amazing.

Oops. Not in North America. My bad:
https://www.brodybrotherspestcontrol.com/blog/are-praying-mantises-endangered-is-it-illegal-to-kill-them/

In some countries, the praying mantis is under protected status. However, in North America, none of the species are endangered. Consequently, there are no legal ramifications for killing a mantis. Where Did This Misconception Come From? The idea that killing a praying mantis is illegal and that this species is endangered was first circulated in ...

Ah! Well, I was given a stern lecture by my sister the other day to make sure the one in my garden does not have access to the hummingbird feeder. Evidently they hunt hummingbirds! One does learn something new every day.
