So - that happened. Actifit: February 23 2021
It has been a rough couple of days. Thank goodness no one is hurt.
What happened was that my daughter and her friend were on a road trip, driving through Montana, and hit an elk. The elk and the car died, and my daughter and her friend are completely fine.
I could honestly make this a commercial for Toyota. They make cars that handle crashes really well. The car took the damage, so the girls didn’t have to.
So anyway. If you ever need advice on how to handle a situation where your kid hits an animal on a country road in some random state a full day’s drive away, I’m your gal. We have spent the last 24 hours navigating through all this!
My daughter flew back home today. Whew.
In the middle of all that going on I have been on work deadlines. I haven’t left the house in two days! But I did manage to do some aerobics today at least.

Modern cars are designed to crush. It is much better that that car is destroyed than the people inside.
I had the misfortune of hitting an elk in Eastern Utah. It ran across the road while I was going 65 mph in a Nissan Altima. That accident was extremely strange in that the elk flew over the top of the car.
I had a dented hood. The elk limped away ... though I fear it probably did not survive. (It was $1500 in damages.)

Thank you for sharing your story. The whole thing traumatized me because I just couldn't believe she survived. But your right - cars crush and absorb impact, which is a great way to preserve human life.
I am glad the girls are okay - that looks scary. Elk are really dangerous here too, especially up north where there are very few fences running alongside the roads.

Thank you for the kind words, @tarazkp. Yes fortunately we have great insurance. The car is totaled, but they will pay us the current value so my daughter can get another car. I'm just so relieved she is okay.
Geez, glad everyone is ok! We've had deer in our area jump over my car as we zoomed by... always worried about one jumping out. Constantly scanning the sides of the roads. Not too much you can do. Thanks to modern engineering for sure. Wow. Very glad your daughter and friend are ok.
Yes, it's really important to be vigilant, @jasonbu. Sometimes they are just a shadow on the road ahead at dusk. And sometimes they just run right in front of your vehicle, and as you said there is nothing you can do.
