Gardening Projects Galore: May 4 2025
This weekend was all about the yard and garden! I don’t have a whole lot to show for it yet in terms of flowers and color because I’m still in winter cleanup mode (and until today it has been cold and/or rainy), but it was so exciting to get a lot done around the property.
The first project of the weekend was creating a defined border around a large garden area that had fallen into disrepair. I had spent several evenings after work pulling out the old terra cotta colored plastic border, pulling weeds and creating an 8-inch gap between the yard and garden.
My husband’s job was going to be putting in a border strip on the outside edge. Then we were going to add much together. Well after toiling for days, I went out on some errands on Saturday morning and came back to find out he had finished the project!
I was thrilled. It allowed me to move on to other things (which I would eventually rope my husband into as well — ha ha).
Here’s a “before” picture.
The next project was a big cleanup of the backyard, which was still covered in fall leaves (which get covered in snow before we can gather them all at the beginning of winter). I also gathered a massive amount of fallen branches and twigs to be burned.
I got through about 2/3 of the brush burning and then my husband offered to take over. To be fair, it was so that I could go cook dinner! He is not a big fan of gardening, but he’s even less inclined to cook.
Again, I was thrilled. I was ready for a break. Maybe I pulled the Huck Finn move and got him interested in doing the brush burning. 😁
Another project I did was to clean all of the leaves and debris from around my little pond. That area is shaping up! I still have to clean out the pond itself, set up the fountain pump and add new aquatic plants.
And I did yet another project to clean up leaves and branches alongside the house. I didn’t get it quite done, but here’s what that mess looked liked along the way.
I think I will sleep well tonight!
Thanks for stopping by!

Love the sisterhood!
So nice of your your husband to mulch everything in while you were gone!👍😊
So many twigs and branches from winter, we have the same thing up here!
I need to walk the yard for branches before I can start mowing!😇
Sounds like you both will sleep good tonight!😊
Oh yes, one must walk the yard and collect the fallen debris (and in our case, the special things the dog left behind) prior to bringing out the mower. Not only is that terrible teeth-grinding crunch when the mower goes over twigs unsettling, but it instantly ages the mower blades!
My neighbor always reminds me when he hears me run over something left over from winter that I missed picking up Lol!😇🤣
Then I hear him run over a tree branch and laugh…😇☺️
🥰🌹
Good
Quite a productive gardening day😂😂
Your husband is the MVP!!
I know, right? I think I'll keep him!
i like the gardening and the barbecue
Thank you! I'm just hoping I can finally get the yard and garden in nice condition so that when I use the barbecue I can look out on a nicely tended garden.
Phew! That looks a lot of ground to maintain 😂
It is indeed, @shanibeer. Every year I swear that the next year I'm going to hire people to do the spring cleanup... and then the spring comes and all I want to do is be out in the garden working, so I say "Well, maybe next year."

Almost as if the clock strikes, sun warms up a bit Northern Hemisphere up out and at it, gardening.
Actually must be quite exciting living in a region with defined seasons, something we had growing up.
Nice sized garden to tend to, with time one finds it a little taxing on them old bones.

You are absolutely right about them old bones, @joanstewart. I will probably hire some young bucks to do this work next year. A few guys with all the right blowers, mowers and tools can get done in a few hours what takes me days and days to do!
Love gardening, now it's more simple tasks performed, the heavy load is done by a service that comes in weekly.
That's brilliant, @joanstewart. I will loom for a service like that at some point. I still like to do it myself, but I'm starting to wonder if the aches and pains are worth it!
Have been happy for them to arrive, approximately 2 hours a week, cut then rake taken away to legal spot where garden refuse goes during summer, winter loads of weeding and preparing the ground for summer again. Now I plant and tend to other little requirements.

Your husband sure did a bit of work while you were away, that was nice of him. Plus all those branches and twigs. The yard looks great, but sounds like a long day for the both of you. I'm spoiled here, my yard is 1/4 acre and doesn't require too much work!
I envy you, @thebighigg! My husband and I will likely downsize to a condo eventually. Or at least a smaller house with a lower maintenance yard!
