My Actifit Report Card: April 21 2021

This morning, the bird ignored me while I was on my walk, but I could see it going after a raven that was probably twice its size. I’m sure it only can get away with that because neither of them really wanted to tangle with each other, but it’s a heck of a sight.

I fumbled with my phone while I was out and I think I accidentally turned off the step tracker, so my number today is unimpressive compared to my normal amount of activity, but you get what the device tracks and have to be happy with that.

Progress on my finals goes well. I’ve put off one class in preference for the other, but I don’t think that I’m in a rough spot with either. Because of how the program works, the finals are usually an accumulation of past work from the class melded together into a final product, but because I’m somewhat out of sequence (my program nominally runs year-round, but I suspect the capstone classes run on a rotation so that cohorts complete it based on when they started the program rather than starting with each new class of inductees), these classes would be “earlier” in the program all other things being equal.

As a result, the amount of work required by these finals is less than that which would have been required by my previous finals, though not by a great margin.

I haven’t been getting much other writing done because I’ve had other things, but I’m looking forward to having more time open up shortly.

I helped my grandfather with his printer. I set it up for him a week ago or so, but there were issues with it because I had forgotten that many of the things he wanted to do were going to be through a different interface and I hadn’t helped him understand how to work with that. It’s nice that people are vaccinated, so I don’t have to feel too worried about exposing them to risk when something spontaneous like printer trouble comes up (not that I get out much, given my own personal preferences and the fact that all I’ve done for the past year has been online). I haven’t yet gotten my own vaccinations complete (I’ve had the first shot of Pfizer), but it’s better than nothing.

One thing I’m interested in as things go on is whether people blame politicians for many of the privations of this past year. I’ve been quite open about my belief that shutting down schools was a great crime against the future generation (to the degree that putting them into compulsory education is beneficial to them, which is a separate point for discussion and a presupposition that those who closed the schools almost universally agreed with even if it bears some examination).

I was doing long-term substitute work at my old workplace and had a realization that the pandemic could very well kill some of my students back in February of last year, but the moment we figured out how the virus worked we should have gone back to school more completely than we have. I think my local district is still fully closed, though I’m not invested in it enough to know for certain. I see students getting picked up by a bus every now and again, but I think it’s actually for a charter or private school. I could be wrong; I haven’t actually read the side, and I should do that if I see one around.
