My Actifit Report Card: May 10 2021

Well, I got more than 17,000 steps in today. That’s almost as much as I ever get, really, and it was the result of being quite diligent about my walking. I also did a little more running/jogging than usual, though I’ve found out that I’m very out of shape.

I know that round is technically a shape, sure, but I’ve really let myself go as far as my capacity to exert myself goes. I think I ran for about a minute and a half when I was out on my morning walk before I had to stop (at least it was full-tilt stuff that my age should have given me the wisdom to warm up for, which is a little less embarrassing), and it was really quite unpleasant as far as that goes. I was really in pain trying to get air and wound up coughing quite a bit, which is always great when you’re around people during a pandemic.

Normally that level of exertion wouldn’t have made me so miserable, but I’ve definitely let myself go during this time of everyone staying home and not having to go out and do stuff.

I also ordered all my stuff for my graduation. Even though there’s not an in-person ceremony, having the regalia feels like part of the deal (and it’s included with the graduation fee, so it’s not like I’m investing anything more by getting it).

It’ll be weird to have a gown and hood, but I kind of like it.

There’s something about reaching this level of achievement that is deeply fulfilling, though I’m not sure how to describe it. I’ve never been one for paper credentials, and I don’t really care about that side of it except for how it might make my life easier when it comes time to find jobs or seek publication.

What I do like is the fact that I’ve been moving toward what I consider to be mastery of the fields I’m interested in. I’ve been getting back into reading books, which is always good, and writing more gives me a chance to work on synthesizing and applying the information I’ve gathered.

The Fitbit says I’ve burned over three thousand calories (it includes resting consumption as well as exercise in its figures), which is good because I went to Taco Bell for breakfast. It’s the first time I’ve really eaten out alone since this whole thing started, though I’ve been out with other people a couple times, and it was quite enjoyable.

But it’s a good thing if I burned more than three thousand calories, because I probably got in half that before my day even really started.

It also says I traveled more than twelve miles, but I suspect that the distance is inflated because of much of my movement being inside (since I get up and take walks on the hour every hour and don’t go outside except in the mornings because it’s very hot here) and GPS being wonky. I suspect that when there’s a weird connection to the satellites it shows up as extra movement due to the perceived perception moving around.

I think there might also be some problems with regards to rejecting car travel, since I was doing some driving as well.

The estimate is probably not too far off in proportion, though it adds up quickly; I’d expect maybe eight or nine miles because I keep my pace pretty brisk, but I’m not sure it’s possible to know for sure without a different way to measure.
