My Actifit Report Card: May 14 2021

Rough day. Good on physical activity. Weight’s where I was hoping it would be, which is good because I’ve been forcing myself to be disciplined.

Michael Malice’s new book, The Anarchist Handbook (or something really similar, which I can’t quite remember for reasons I’ll get to in a moment), came out today. It looks good, though I’m not as familiar with all of the thinkers whose work it collects as someone who wants to give a totally fair judgment should be.

Had a migraine that really did a number on me starting around noon. That was not a great experience, and I’m still getting occasional waves of pain as I try to do stuff. I’m going to go to bed early, both because I’m just suffering a fair amount of pain and it’ll be better once I’m lying in the dark and because the headache’s done a good job of sapping my energy.

Also, my computer had a fan breakdown issue that leads to thermal throttling and random restarts. It still technically works (albeit with no airflow, which is bad when the environment I live in is already becoming uncomfortably hot), but I’ve shifted over to an old laptop of mine to be safe. This laptop’s actually quite a machine in its own right, though a major step down. The ironic thing is that the crisis that precipitated me getting my computer was a fan in this laptop breaking down and creating awful ball bearing noises. It “fixed itself” in the sense that the fans are running quietly again without any real intervention on my behalf.

The unpleasant thing is that my broken computer is a weird HP design that has been out of warranty for a while (and, as far as I can tell, out of production as well). It was built as a VR backpack, which also doubles really well as a subcompact tower. Unfortunately, now that it’s broken down I don’t really have any option other than an RMA, especially since I don’t trust myself to take it apart and do stuff with it because of the massive internal battery and not wanting to work with a potentially hazardous machine.

Let’s hope I don’t have two computers with fan issues simultaneously. That would be sort of the mode.

One consequence of the PC breakdown situation is that I have had to spend some time getting stuff ported over. That plus updates, some tweaks to maximize my comfort, and adjusting to the different layout means that I lost a couple hours that could’ve otherwise been productive today. I don’t have access to my Hive Keychain on this machine, so I’m locked out of PeakD until I get my keys ported over (or manually input).

It’s a shame that this week has been sort of hit or miss, but the good news is that I find it difficult to believe that I’m going to have this rough of a week next week and I still more or less returned to where I want to be (albeit with some rather underwhelming blog progress). Turns out blending finger problems, horrid headaches (i.e. literally collapsing on a futon because standing is too painful), and computer issues is not a good recipe for productivity.

But next week is going to be awesome, right?

Well, maybe not awesome for everyone, but hopefully awesome for me as a writer. I’m feeling a second wind come over me. I’m working on some new video scripts, which should be fantastic once they are ready. Then it’s straight into blog stuff for a while to get that back in order. Exoworld got a big progress update yesterday, so now it’s just a matter of getting some more stuff done around the edges and getting that ready for playtesting.

Book-wise, I haven’t made a whole lot of progress. I need to get back into Aspects of Sand (which I’m set up to keep working on without any significant disruption despite my computer issues), and being on my laptop may actually help make me a little more disciplined with regards to that.

The only thing that’s not nice is that the added distance of the laptop chassis between my screen and I has a small issue in making things less legible. I have no problem with just turning up font size when I write and taking other steps to make things easier on myself, but for whatever reason I’m struggling to operate this laptop’s UI stuff and I suspect that my eyes might not be what they were a few years ago.

It doesn’t help that I don’t have a mousepad for the desk I’m using, and it has an odd texture that seems to mess with my mouse, leading to a little bit of undesired drift.

Upside: I really don’t have much desire to play games on this computer, which means fewer temptations.
