Shopping Wisely at a Specialty Grocer for Specialty Dishes

When everyone is going for fried, roast, pie, and you go against all your friends' wishes and throw them greens... 😅

It was quite an interesting journey to shop for something healthy in a budget. You just got to be very prudent with what you choose and sometimes... "niche" grocers that allows you to get in a smaller amount but a little higher price is actually much wiser in the wallet than going to cheap bulk stores

On a bulk store you won't be able to get a single large onion (that looks like a giant shallot) for less than MYR1 (less than 25 cents) and parsley, coriander too.

Specialty stores too have their own special rates corner, but you just need to wander a bit and look out for it.

I have been at the right place at the right time of the year for all the sales from "niche ingredients" 😂

Even ready packed washed salad greens were cheaper. I don't have to buy whole and pay probably 3x the price for what I need to do.


Another fun part was when I was picking ingredients I came across this gigantic pack that I couldn't resist taking a picture with it!

(Don't worry. I didn't waste my money on this. Just taking a picture. No wallet abuse took place that day)


So far, the MOST EXPENSIVE ingredient are these washed ready mini colourful potatoes, where I had no choice but to get the whole pack.

And with the Grocer downstairs my home had "discounted Avocado" I am ready to make my greens.

Have you figured out what type of salads I am making?

Definitely not coleslaw 😅

Mom is barred from mayo (made with eggs)

One of these have super colourful ingredients, but they are less friendly for the kids ("spicy" from Bell peppers and onion)

The other one requires a little more work with boiling and air frying the mini potatoes .

Good thing that both allows me to add mixed salads and feta cheese!

And eventually creates a "balanced" diet for all the meat and majority carbs in the early Christmas dinner, haha.

So have you guessed what are those 2 salads about?

Salad 1

Roasted mini potatoes, Avocado cubes, greens, feta cheese, djon mustard, cold pressed olive oil, honey, garlic seasoning

Salad 2

Red Onion, Bell Pepper, cherrie tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese, balsamic vinegar, pinch of sugar, a bit of ground pepper.

(I actually forgot about the nuts and berries portion because I was rushing to make it 😅)

In the end, one of the 2 salad was well received, and the other.. well, I get to have it as my first meal the next day (with some added meat)


There's a turn of the events though... but that has to go onto the next sharing

在预算内购买健康的东西是一次非常有趣的旅程。 你必须对你的选择非常谨慎,有时......“利基”杂货店可以让你买到少量但价格稍高的东西,实际上比去便宜的散装商店更明智。

在散装商店里,你不可能以低于 1 马来西亚林吉特(不到 25 美分)的价格内买到一个大洋葱(看起来像一个巨大的葱),还有欧芹、香菜在同样的价钱内。

专卖店也有自己的特价专区,但您只需要稍微逛逛并留意一下即可。
这一次我在正确的时间出现在正确的地点,所有的销售都来自“利基成分”😂

即使是现成包装的清洗沙拉蔬菜也更便宜。 我不必购买整个产品,也不必为我需要做的事情支付大约三倍的价格。

另一个有趣的部分是,当我挑选食材时,我发现了这个巨大的包装,我忍不住与它合影!

(放心,我没有浪费钱,只是拍个照而已,那天没有发生钱包被滥用的情况)


到目前为止,最昂贵的成分是这些洗好的迷你彩色土豆,我别无选择,只能买整包。


楼下的杂货店我家有“打折鳄梨”,准备做蔬菜了立即开始。

你知道我要做什么类型的沙拉吗?

绝对不是凉拌卷心菜😅

妈妈被禁止吃蛋黄酱(用鸡蛋做的)


其中一种含有超级多彩的成分,但对孩子们不太友好(来自青椒和洋葱的“辣味”)

另一种需要更多的工作来煮和空气炸迷你土豆。
最终在早期的圣诞晚餐中为所有肉类和大部分碳水化合物创造了“均衡”饮食,哈哈。

那么你猜出那两份沙拉是什么意思了吗?

沙拉 1

烤迷你土豆、牛油果块、蔬菜、羊奶酪、东芥末、冷榨橄榄油、蜂蜜、大蒜调味料

沙拉 2

红洋葱、甜椒、樱桃番茄、黄瓜、羊奶酪、香醋、少许糖、一点胡椒粉。

(我实际上忘记了坚果和浆果部分,因为我急于制作它😅)

最后,两份沙拉中的一份很受欢迎,另一份就….至少,我第二天可以把它作为第一顿饭(另添加了一些肉)


虽然事情发生了转变...但这必须进入下一次分享吧!

Apabila semua orang mahu goreng, panggang, pai, dan anda menentang semua kehendak rakan anda dan “mempersembahkan” mereka sayur-sayuran... 😅

Membeli sesuatu yang sihat dalam bajet adalah perjalanan yang agak menarik. Anda hanya perlu sangat berhemat dengan apa yang anda pilih dan kadang-kadang... kedai runcit "niche" yang membolehkan anda mendapatkan dalam jumlah yang lebih kecil tetapi harga yang sedikit lebih tinggi sebenarnya lebih bijak untuk dompet daripada pergi ke kedai pukal murah.

Di kedai pukal, anda memang tidak akan boleh mendapatkan sebiji bawang besar (yang kelihatan seperti bawang merah gergasi) dengan harga kurang daripada MYR1 (kurang daripada 25 sen), pasli, ketumbar juga dalam harga yang sama.

Kedai khusus juga mempunyai sudut kadar jualan khas mereka sendiri, tetapi anda hanya perlu bersiar-siar sedikit dan melihatnya.
Kali ini saya telah berada di tempat dan pada masa yang betul dalam untuk semua jualan dari "bahan niche" 😂

Malah sayur-sayuran salad yang telah dibasuh siap dibungkus pun lebih murah. Saya tidak perlu membeli keseluruhan dan membayar mungkin 3x harga untuk apa yang perlu saya lakukan.


Satu lagi bahagian yang menyeronokkan ialah apabila saya memilih bahan-bahan, saya terjumpa pek gergasi ini yang saya tidak dapat menahan mengambil gambar dengannya!

(Jangan risau. Saya tidak membazir wang saya untuk ini. Hanya mengambil gambar. Tiada penyalahgunaan dompet berlaku pada hari itu)


Setakat ini, bahan PALING MAHAL ialah kentang mini berwarna-warni yang telah dibasuh ini, di mana saya tidak mempunyai pilihan selain mendapatkan keseluruhan pek.

Dan dengan Kedai runcit di tingkat bawah rumah saya telah "diskaun Avocado", tibalah masa untuk bersiap sedia membuat salad saya.

Dapatkah anda mengetahui jenis salad apa yang saya tengah buat ni?

Semestinya bukan coleslaw 😅

Setakat ini, mak dilarang makan mayo (dibuat dengan telur)


Salah satu daripada ini mempunyai bahan yang sangat berwarna-warni, tetapi ia kurang mesra untuk kanak-kanak ("pedas" daripada lada benggala dan bawang)

Yang lain memerlukan sedikit kerja lagi dengan merebus dan menggoreng kentang mini.

Dan akhirnya mencipta diet "seimbang" untuk semua daging dan kebanyakan karbohidrat dalam makan malam Krismas awal, haha.

Jadi adakah anda telah meneka apakah 2 salad itu?

Salad 1

Kentang mini panggang, kiub alpukat, sayur-sayuran, keju feta, mustard djon, minyak zaitun sejuk, madu, perasa bawang putih

Salad 2

Bawang Merah, Lada Loceng, tomato ceri, timun, keju feta, cuka balsamic, secubit gula, sedikit lada kisar.

(Saya sebenarnya terlupa tentang bahagian kacang dan beri kerana saya tergesa-gesa untuk membuatnya 😅)


Akhirnya, salah satu daripada 2 salad diterima dengan baik, dan satu lagi.. baiklah, saya boleh memakannya sebagai hidangan pertama saya pada hari berikutnya (dengan sedikit daging tambahan)


Tetapi pun ada giliran acaranya... itu perlu diteruskan ke perkongsian seterusnya bah!

Actually it's a great idea!
However I also realised that I have trouble making those side by side tables for dual languages. So I'll just triple post (for 3-lingual) for this special post haha

Shopping thrifty is very good!
Sometimes bulk stores make you spend more for "cheaper items" (but packed in bulk)

VERY HARD to get my wife and kids to love the type of greens you do. 😂
I personally have to force myself to get use to it due to my condition, and it has never been easy.
The perseverance of insisting people to eat healthy is still admirable.
