Most of my steps today were from running errands and a bit of yard work. Hot and humid today, even more brutal weather in the forecast tomorrow, so no long walks until a merely warm Sunday.
While moving some firewood earlier today I disturbed a wasps’ nest. Ended up swatting one of them away just as it was starting to sting me. I haven’t been stung for a few years now but usually it hurts like hell. This guy’s stinger must have just barely punctured my epidermis before I swatted him away. Just a little bit of swelling and a teeny bit of pain, barely noticeable.
I usually have a live and let live attitude with the critters in my yard. While mowing the lawn this morning, I took care not to run over several spring peepers which had wandered from a nearby marsh. The worms chomping through our compost, they’re our friends. Even whatever bug’s eating our pepper and lettuce leaves got no more than a baking soda spray from me yesterday. I generally don’t use pesticides, and certainly not on the vegetables we grow.
But wasps? Die. Die. Die. So when it cooled off this evening, I released the dogs of war AKA Black Flag Wasp and Hornet foaming spray.
