A mystery that had haunted families and authorities for a decade came to an end in 2019, when the skeletal remains of two Colorado tourists — Sarah Bennett, 26, and Andrew Miller, 28 — were found deep in a sealed uranium mine in southern Utah. They had not been seen since they disappeared in 2011.

They had gone on a quiet weekend camping trip in May 2011. The couple, known for their love of nature and photography, had planned a three-day trip to explore the rugged, historic beauty of the San Rafael Valley. The area is a rugged desert filled with old uranium mines and rocky canyons. “They weren’t adventurers,” Sarah’s sister Emily Bennett told The Denver Post in 2020. “They were just looking for a little solitude, to get away from the hustle and bustle of work and life.” But Sarah and Andrew never returned.

Their last stop was a gas station in Green River, Utah, where they filled up their Subaru Outback and bought a map of Emery County. They have been missing ever since. An extensive search using helicopters, volunteers, dogs, and drones turned up nothing. The desert seemed to swallow them up. Years passed. Rumors spread—murder, drug dealing, even alien involvement—but no concrete evidence was found.

Then in August 2019, a group of geology students from the University of Utah made a gruesome discovery while excavating an old uranium mine near Temple Mountain. About 300 feet into the mine, they found two fully clothed skeletons sitting side by side on two rusty folding chairs. A broken lantern, a rusty thermos, and an old Nikon camera lay nearby. The mine had collapsed and closed naturally, creating what experts call a "natural tomb" that preserved the scene. Dental records confirmed that they were Sarah and Andrew. The exact cause of their death is still officially "undetermined"!
