Market Friday Shops for Freedom

avatar
(Edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise! That is me!) Today, in the United State, it is Independence Day, the Fourth of July. What better place to go than to the to where it all began? I have a feeling if we follow the Freedom Trail, my store will be somewhere along there.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place!! Thank you! ❤

I didn't know that the Old State House in Boston had a gift shop. (We are baaaack!) I am not sure how I missed it on the first go around! I think I was so interested in the history of it and admiring the architecture, trinkets were the last thing on my mind. But, when I went back, I went in and enjoyed many of the items they had in there, although most were laced in sarcasm.

There is the balcony that the Declaration of Independence is read in its entirety, every 4th of July since it was written in 1776. At the top of the building are the lion and unicorn, which are symbols of the United Kingdom. They were forcibly removed in a protest and burned in a bonfire. The lion and unicorn made a return when the building underwent a restoration project in 1882.

1111.JPG

I just get into the place that I was looking for and ... Oh! Has this ever happened to you? You find exactly what you are looking for and then - they move it. Not to worry! There is plenty of other things to look at.

IMG_4402.JPG

This is one of those funny/not funny moments in time. I couldn't have said it better myself! This was what was written about this cup.

Need a daily reminder of how screwed up things are? Then consider getting the Disappearing Civil Liberties Mug. The mug depicts the Bill of Rights, one of the most revered and essential documents of our nation. Congress has been picking away at these essential rights for a decade, and now you can actually see them disappear every time you pour in hot liquid. Oh, they don't all vanish – your right to assemble and protest takes a hit, but your right to bear arms stays just where it was. This can be used by left and right-handed people.

IMG_4412.JPG

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

How to Participate:

1. Go to the market! Any market will do! Food, Clothing, Plant or Animal, if you wish. You can go to the zoo or an art auction. Anywhere or anything that you pay money for a service. I once went to a nail salon.
2. Take pictures! Be creative (or not)
3. Tell us a little bit about the market, what brought you here?
4. Post the picture(s)
5. Don’t forget to hashtag it! #MarketFriday by @dswigle
6. Drop the link to your post here so I can easily find them

It is always interesting to see the different markets around the globe! C’mon! Show me your market shots! I eagerly await them!

IMG_4399.JPG

There are giant pencils with erasers... scrolls of the Declaration of Independence. Signed baseballs, all kinds of political satire written. Tee shirts encouraging you to start a Revolution. If you can imagine it, I am sure someone will make you one.

Boston's Old City Hall used as the city council, 1865 to 1969. Benjamin Franklin's statue still hangs out there. A copper donkey sits in the courtyard and after a little grumbling from the workers at City Hall, a set of shoes were sculpted with the Republican elephant on it. They stand in front of the donkey and say stand in opposition on it, showing they don't agree. As a note, You cannot notice it from the outside, but, inside is a steakhouse. I discovered it by mistake. The new City Hall is now located in Government Center, in Downtown Boston.

#111.JPG

And just like that, this post is done. I hope you had a good time! The beautiful city of Boston is an incredible place for a little bit of shopping, especially while I am playing tourist in this history-laden city, where there is always fun to be had! As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit and for supporting the #MarketFriday challenge! We will sit for a moment or three and then, we may wander back down to the Quincy Market and see if we can find another lobster for lunch. Have a most fabulous day! Cheers!!

As a footnote, the television series Cheers used exterior shots of the Bull & Finch, which is a restaurant and bar on Beacon Street. It has since changed its name to Cheers.

Let the sun shine in on your life
So the joy may touch your soul

I have been discovering new places, some right in my own area! This week, I went to a new farmers market that was two minutes from my house and while I was there, discovered another farm that sells eggs. Yay! I love to share and be shared with! I am intrigued by different cultures. It is exciting and yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery, a kite festival! Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post, again and again, I am humbled by you. Taking the time to read, comment and even upvoting. For all of these reasons, I am eternally grateful. All of these kindnesses are notice and appreciated.

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

Is that man playing a Hurdy Gurdy? Or am i just shell shocked from all the explosions and noise in my neighborhood? Haha. It just passed midnight here in California... Did you get a hat? ;)

Yes!! In fact, that was a Hurdy-Gurdy! Hehe! I have no doubt that you might be a little shell-shocked as my neighborhood was like being downtown DC during the festivities!

I really wanted a hat, but, passed on it.

I really do love Boston and all the personalities and flavors of the different cities. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop in and say hello, leaving such kind words behind. I hope you had a great fourth of July!!

I remember a long long time ago Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man song. I really had no idea what it was or that it was "thing." I don't think i've ever even seen one and i've been playing guitar and going in musical instrument stores my entire life. How funny that is : )

Tonight is much quieter yay!

Thank you so very much : ) :) :)

The only places I have seen them are in the cities and mostly East Coast. So, I thought they probably came from Europe and looked it up.

The hurdy-gurdy, an instrument that dates back to medieval times was a favorite of French kings. The hurdy-gurdy, known in France as the vielle a roue or just vielle, has a long history and has been played by everyone from blind beggars to the nobility. The origin of the hurdy-gurdy remains unclear. See here.

In another place, they made note o Donovan's song. :)

It is so much more peaceful today! Yes!

It's always nice to be a tourist and a little buyer ... especially in places that make you think you live in other times, in the past.

I like the series dedicated to this city.

It is fun to be a tourist, isn't it? Truly. Living in other times can be a wonderful thing, but, then, of course, we wouldn't have the modern conveniences that we have now.

I love to travel and see different places and different things that this world has to offer. I have been given many surprised about it and it has never been a disappointment. I want to thank you for taking the time to stop by and say hello and leaving your kind words. Always a pleasure to see you.

Oh what a fun post! I got the brain teaser and that always makes me happy! Of course I love to hear you tell the various bit and pieces of history. It really adds a lot of flavor to the whole deal! The photos are always a pleasure to the eyes. My fave is of course the hurdy-gurdy man. How awesome. I love the sounds of one. Not too many play them. I would love to fool around with one. So that was so totally cool. Well done - as always Sunshine!!! Right now I have nothing for MF!! I am hoping for some inspiration, maybe from a dream!

Oh, that is awesome! I hardly ever get the brain teasers! ;)

Oh, this is so easy to tell stories to, you know because it is interesting to me, the birth of our nation and how this all came to be. The men and women and how dedicated they were to the causes, truly, truly inspires me. How could it not? Could I ever be so dedicated to something, knowing it could cause my early demise? I'm not so sure. Truly.

The Hurdy-Gurdy man! I loved that guy and his sweet beret! He had a little dog in the basket next to him that kept him company while he played. He was such a kind looking soul and he played music with his heart. It was truly beautiful. I hope you do get to Boston and so many other places. There are so many places and so little time. That is the way I feel. I just need to quit work and hit the road! ;)

Anyway, thanks for stopping by and saying hello! I hope you have a most awesome day after the fourth of July! :)

Yes I find folks like the hurdy gurdy man so interesting. I would just love to hear their story. But then that would most likely ruin the fascination.

Yes quit the job and hit the road Charles Kuralt style ;). I think that is a wonderful plan! Never run out of material to blog and think about all the fun along the way!

Oh, you know I never run out of material! I am just too lazy to dig it up! :)

The hurdy-gurdy man is one of those characters that you just know there is a story there, somewhere. And you are totally right! Sometimes, it is more fun just thinking about it than the actual story.

Hope you are having a great weekend!

hey don't all vanish – your right to assemble and protest takes a hit, but your right to bear arms stays just where it was.

Very well said!

Oh! Has this ever happened to you? You find exactly what you are looking for and then - they move it

Yes, and those situations taught me to buy what I really like and don't rely on next chance ) Especially on my travels. Sometimes, when you are in some amazing place, you think - I should come here again, and do this and that. But when you are back home, you understand that it most likely never happens ) So you'd get your chance what you have it.

It was a wonderful reading! And the man at the last photograph is soooo nice!
Thank you for a mood for a whole day! I for the idea of my today's #MarketFriday entry... ;o)

Oh, those vanishing civil liberties!! I am pretty sure you are right about that! If you see it and you want it, buy it and don't wait until next time. Either there won't be a next time or it won't be there next time! One or the other! I agree!

Oh, I loved the man in the last picture! He was my favorite! He was playing his Hurdy Gurdy, I am not sure if you have ever seen one, but, they almost sound like a violin. He was seriously enjoying the sound and people were gathered around him to listen to the charming music.

Thank you for stopping in to say hello and drop your link! So much appreciated and I hope you have a most amazing weekend! When do you get to see your daughter next??

Hello today, Denise 🤗

You won't believe how much I look forward to your reply every time 😊 It is always words from your heart and sounds so true!

Either there won't be a next time or it won't be there next time!

That is a phrase from native speaker )) The funny thing I understand, but I can't make it so good yet ))

I never heard about Hurdy Gurdy, fancy name ) But it looks very likely to our Ukrainian traditional instrument called Goat 😁 Sounds not less fun, right?

Oh, my daughter... I hope it's her turn to visit us )) I could make it in August, but still not sure. And still can't get used to this long distance between us. But today I downloaded photos I took on my last visit, I'll try to process some part of them for her. Even wrote a post with one 👩‍💻

By the way, you never focus on photography in your posts, but your photographs are always a perfect job!

Thank you kindly for the tip, and your nice comment, and ... yes, have an amazing weekend! 🎈🌞🌝

I am so happy to hear that you look forward to my posts! You are a most delightful person to converse back and forth with. Always so interesting and your English is so good, I forget you are not a native. Honestly.

I do not joke with that!

Oh, the distances are always too far when they are our babies. My mother cried when I left home. I loved to Europe for a while and then all over the United States for the job, but, it wasn't until I had my own that I realized how much her heart hurt. Even though there were nine children in the family, we were connected in a very special way. I still went home a lot and she and my dad visited often, but, not the same as when we were together, shopping, laughing, cooking and having coffee or wine. It is very hard to explain I think. It goes beyond love.

I never focus on photography as I always think it should stand on its own and if it is a good picture it will speak to a person, if it is only okay, hopefully, the words will convey its meaning. Something like that. :)

I am sitting enjoying my coffee, you and I. :) It is always a fun chat! Enjoy your dinner, it is getting late in the day there!

Your comment touched me to tears! I sit in the kitchen, or rather we sit, you drink coffee, and I eat raspberries and smile so broadly that my husband looks with jealousy :D

Even though there were nine children in the family, we were connected in a very special way. I still went home a lot and she and my dad visited often, but, not the same as when we were together, shopping, laughing, cooking and having coffee or wine. It is very hard to explain I think. Nine children!!! How wonderful! I have the only brother. When we were kids, it was often too much of him for me. But now ... we aren't in touch almost, and I miss the time when everything was okay between us. Still hope it gets better.

When we are together with my daughter Nat, we do what you talk about - shopping, laughing, playing fool or complain about our lives, cook or having meal together or wine, and that shared time together is what I miss now so much. Now we both are busy, sometimes she can call me only on her way back home after work, because "mom, I am so tired that when I get home I fall on the bed and asleep right away". And I feel so sorry for cannot make dinner for her, or a breakfast. Eh... we all know that happens one day.. )

That you so much for making my evening!! Wish you have a great day ahead!

I liked reading your post. I wonder why you can celebrate July 4th and if Dutch people would do so we are insulting people. By now I do not think we celebrate anything anymore.
The market I was looking for 2 weeks ago and I could not find it. Perhaps it is gone or only because of the weather?
I wish you a happy day.

I'm not sure why we can celebrate and you cannot. I don't see it as an insult, as it happened WAAAAY before my time and my celebration is not because of the war, or winners or losers, but, rather of the birth of our nation. I understand what you are saying as it may feel like an insult, but, honestly, that isn't what is meant.

I am not sure of Dutch History and only know of the eighty years war. Now I will have to look it up.

No worries about the Market! It is still nice to see you! As always, I hope you have a most wonderful day!

By now I am also not sure of the Dutch history. It seems to be a forbidden something by now and so wrong. My mom is Dutch my father isn't and if it comes to back in history it is the question who lived where/which life back than.

Thanks for the tip.

Well, I looked up Dutch History last night on Google and I found it fascinating, truly. You should look it up, if only for your own curiosity. It does have more twists and turns, but, you have been around much longer than we have. ;)

Any type of market, I even do the services I pay for. :) Nails, Movies, Restaurants. I must say my people get inventive! :) Have a most wonderful day and thank you!

I know about the dutch history. They weree and are all over the world by now painted as abusers because of history. Seems as if they are the only one's with slaves so the history will be rewritten. Celebration days forbidden.

I noticed your people are very inventive.

America was built on slave labor! Not a proud moment in history and one of the reasons for the Civil War here.

Maybe I am naive, but, I have never seen the Dutch in any other light except friendly and helpful to me. But,what do I know? I lived in Europe as a guest and was always treated with dignity and respect by all. It was the most I could ever dream of.

And I loved it there. Inventive. Oh, I am sure that you are right. Haha.

I also do not understand it. Most European countries had colonies oversea and slaves and even human zoos.

This beside of the fact the Africans sold there own people and neighbours as a slave and even did so long after slavery was forbidden (long is about 100 years). For some reason they ignore their own part in history and still do.

Each country has parts we now think different about, but it is still history and you can not wipe it out by changing facts or wiping out celebration days.

Well, we will see. The Kalergi plan is used to build 1 Europe with the hope we have one history together. That will be a great one. Forcing people to forget, hate, rape, all in the name of?

I hope to join soon.

'Keep calm and start a revolution' I like that one. I call for a World Wide TAX revolt, it truly is theft, all we are doing is funding war/crime etc against our control or will and it does not sit well with me.. Loving it my friend have a lovely weekend. Decided to put in a sneaky entry today x x

Hehe! A sneaky entry!? Oh, I can hardly wait to get to it! But, it will be in my morning as I am falling asleep at the computer tonight. It is past midnight which isn't late, but, so many late nights in a row does it to me!

We do need a tax revolt! I decided to build a net zero house so I don't have to buy electric or any other thing from the man! Then, when the grid goes down, I'll be all ready for it.

But, I have learned things that I never seen in History books.

I have to get down to the market again and shot some shots of our fancy town square market and share it next Friday.

Oh, that would be so cool, Zeke!!! The market was small and usually, I have more than this, but, it was a holiday yesterday night(and I post the night before to make it available for Europe and the Far East) so I skimped a bit. :)

Thank you for stopping by and for your always kind words to everyone on the platform. It is so nice to see people that care about people. I do hope you get some market shots! I can hardly wait to see what you come up with!

Thanks again! #MarketFriday loves you!

Yes!!! The mug was super cool and don't we all (well most of us) want it to be oh-so-wrong!! It was a fun little stop while we there anyway, nothing huge, but, fun, nonetheless. Thank you for stopping by, saying hello and leaving your kind works behind! It is so appreciated!

Very well done as usual. Fun idea to get some post about different markets. A lot of those items you showed us are very cool. I like the mug a lot. I will see if I can make it to some kind of store this afternoon on my walk.

Oh, thank you so much! You are so very, very kind! It has been a most interesting ride, with all the different markets from all over the world. And I find it fascinating to share the cultures this way. It makes for a better understanding in this world.

That would be awesome, but, if you cannot, just remember we are a weekly thing, so whenever is awesome! Thanks for stopping by and saying hello and leaving your words behind!

I didn't know that about the lion and the unicorn. Thanks for the history lesson. :-)

I thought that was interesting too. I didn't know about it until I went there the first time, or perhaps I didn't pay attention in class? Most of what I learn in person, I never see in books. I found that interesting.

Now, I look forward to seeing more things in person that I may have not paid proper attention to. Hence the reasons for going back to these places again.

Have you ever found that or is it just my lack of attention?

Thanks so much for stopping by, leaving your words. I know someday I will catch up enough to visit blogs again! Le sigh

Great looking colonial (?) architecture, well the inside looks like that... the outside, not so much!... but such an historic site, if that has been the tradition to read the Declaration for every year since the inception!

I love the photo of the guy playing the hurdy gurdy, hope the music was also fun to listen to!

The inside does, but the outside is straight up Georgian Architecture. It is true, they read the Declaration of Independence every year at 10 am on the 4th of July. I think that must have been the hour that it was read the first time.

History is kind of cool.

The Hurdy-Gurdy is so fun when you come across one, which is more and more infrequently! I do love it and the violinic sound it makes when the wheels turn and the string vibrate. I actually saw two this day, across town from each other, but, haven't seen one in more months than I can remember.

Thank you for stopping by and for leaving your kind words. Much appreciated!

This just made me realize how confusing the world is lol! Lot's of contradicting ideas. They put the lion and unicorn, took it down and then put it back. Disappearing what? Not for a long time for it will surely return. Throw the outside and eat the inside and then what again? Grumbling opposition. Sigh. Nothing's changed. We do repeat history lol! Still a screwed up world but we get along. Amazing. So, yeah, Happy Independence! :D :D

Amidst all the confusion, there will always be beauty in all things. Forget-me-not indeed! Wherever we are, we MUST find things that make us smile. Stop and enjoy the flowers and enjoy the music.

No flowers, no music? No problem. There's always good food to enjoy :D

Hahaha! Well, when you put it that way, I sure did write contradictory stuff! LOL Sometimes I don't take long enough to explain because I am sure that people will get bored and tune me out! We sure do live in a screwed up world!!

That is why history keeps repeating itself. But, I love you all anyway. Always have,

There is beauty in everything, you just may not look at it the right way. Half of the fun is enjoying the journey. If people could only see and b patient.

No flowers, no music? No problem. There's always good food to enjoy

You are totally cool #Market Friday Loves you~

That sounds like an amazing fourth of July.

I went out to watch a fireworks show than come back to the entire neighborhood launching big ones into the sky. Was floating around in the pool on a raft watching the sky light up. This morning I went out to look at the screen cover and it was covered in ash and derby from all the fireworks hehe. I thought some of them where rather close I guess I was right.

Heyyy! Yours sounds pretty great itself!!

Of course, there is no shortage of 4th of July shows in the Washington, DC area, but the neighborhood I live in does the same thing. Get the biggest, loudest albeit pretties fireworks to toss up in the sky. Now, those kind are illegal here, but, being as I have Secret Service, State Department, Pentagon, Police and White House representation here, we sit back and enjoy the show.

Oh yes! They are always closer than we think! LOL, It sounds like you had a great one!!! Thanks for stopping by @enjar! You always leave amazing comments! Thank you!!!

All the stores do that too, just so you have to look through the entire store and check them out - just so you can find it! Thank you for making such an awesome post and I already copied the recipe and my girls said they wanted to try it out! So yay!!!

They love marmalade too!

Thanks for your many kindnesses and having such a loving heart.

Interesting to take that historical tour but it seems kind of strange that there is so much sarcasm laced in it - I guess it's just showing more of the peoples sentiment and the state of the union.
Thanks for sharing!

I was guessing it was showing the state of the times. And to be fair, that was the only place it showed up that way, in the old State House! ;)

(Tipu is down for some reason, otherwise, there would be a tip involved)
