“The Rocky Road to Dublin,” covered by The Rolling Stones & The Chieftains … (Celtic / Fold / Ballad – Music to Your Ears, Covers–18)

avatar

There’s another path – a not-so-rocky road, back to the comfort and safety of home.

The Rolling Stones / The Chieftains – “The Rocky Road to Dublin”

“The Rocky Road to Dublin” (1995 – Dubliners' version from 1964)

In this traditional song from the 19th century, an Irish man relates the story of his journey from his hometown to the far-off shore of Liverpool, England. He is off to seek his fortune. Instead, he meets misfortune. The poor migrant is mocked, robbed, and scorned.

The Smooth Road Back Home

When the locals at his destination taunt him and call him a fool, he flies into a rage, and confronts them. His only relief comes when some of his Irish compatriots rush to his rescue, and “clear the way,”  possibly for his return, on a not-so-rocky road, back to the safety, comfort, and security of his homeland.

The lyrics were written by D. K. Gavan, who was known as "The Galway Poet."  It was first popularized by Harry Clifton, and subsequently by The Dubliners.

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones are a British rock’n’roll band, which has been active for close to 6 decades.

For the past 5 decades or more, they have been known as “The Greatest Rock’n’Roll Band in the World.”  Nuff said.   (Image source)

The Chieftains

For the past 5 decades or more, The Chieftains have been one of the pre-eminent Irish bands, and definitely one of the most popular. To a great extent, it was The Chieftains that brought Celtic music out to the world.

It’s safe to say that they are “The Greatest Celtic Music Band in the World.”  Nuff said.   (Image source)

While in the merry month of May, from me home I started
Left the girls of Tuam so sad and broken hearted
Saluted father dear, kissed me darling mother
Drank a pint of beer, me grief and tears to smother

Then off to reap the corn, leave where I was born
Cut a stout black thorn to banish ghosts and goblins
Bought a pair of brogues rattling o'er the bogs
And fright'ning all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin

One, two, three, four, five,
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
All the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah

In Mullingar that night I rested limbs so weary
Started by daylight next morning blithe and early
Took a drop of pure to keep me heart from sinking
That's a Paddy's cure whenever he's on drinking

See the lassies smile, laughing all the while
At me curious style, 'twould set your heart a bubblin'
Asked me was I hired, wages I required
I was almost tired of the rocky road to Dublin

One, two, three, four, five
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
All the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah

In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity
To be soon deprived a view of that fine city
So then I took a stroll, all among the quality
Me bundle it was stole, all in a neat locality

Something crossed me mind, when I looked behind
No bundle could I find upon me stick a wobblin'
Inquiring for the rogue, they said me Connaught brogue
Wasn't much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin

One, two, three, four, five
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
All the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah

From there I got away, me spirits never falling
Landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing
The Captain at me roared, said that no room had he
When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy

Down among the pigs, played some hearty rigs
Danced some hearty jigs, the water round me bubbling
When off Holyhead, I wished meself was dead
Or better for instead on the rocky road to Dublin

One, two, three, four, five
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
All the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah Well, the boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed
Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it
Blood began to boil, temper I was losing
Poor old Erin's Isle they began abusing

"Hurrah me soul" says I, me Shillelagh I let fly
Some Galway boys were nigh and saw I was a hobble in
With a load "Hurray" joined in the affray
We quietly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin

One, two, three, four, five
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, whack follol de rah

Every time I hear this song, I remember the famous poem by the Greek writer Constantine Cavafys: Ithaca. The journey is the most important, the obstacles that present themselves in the way and that will make you stronger. When you arrive in Ithaca, at your final destination, the important thing will be what you have lived, what you did to be there. Thank you for sharing.

Glad you enjoyed it, and glad it jogged a few memories of other great music. Cheers!

Hi @majes.tytyty,

I'm here to suggest you to enter this contest with a post:
https://steemit.com/steemfest/@anomadsoul/the-road-to-steem-fest-or-planning-wanting-doubting-on-going-to-sf-write-about-it

there will be 16 of these - with two week windows.

Here is mine - the longest by far and filled with Bangkok minnow tips and info:

https://steemit.com/busy/@fitinfun/no-turning-back-on-my-road-to-steemfest-bangkok-thailand

Note my vote! You will get this too and maybe another one is coming before payout from another sponsor. 16 of those will be good.

You can search the roadtosteemfest tag if you want to see others - there are about 15 so far and maybe a few people you know.

= =

Also go here:

Go to this post for info:
https://steemit.com/steem/@jerrybanfield/voting-bot-ends-autovotes-for-up-to-4000-followers-begin

If you sign up for Jerry's newsletter, you will get one upvote each day by taking this action. I am getting them for about $0.80-$1.00 depending on his power. He is offering this to the first 4000, and nowhere close to that are on it yet. Free money!

I assume you know he shut down his bidbot and this may happen with more due to the upcoming fork. You would have to adjust course, but I think you are rich enough now to go with whatever comes next. You curation income will double, so yay.

I hope you are doing well as I am. Talk to you soon :)

Hi FnF

Thanks for the comment. I've just read your post, and have opened the links to your other posts on this topic. Clearly, you're being very thorough, and I'm sure your insight and advice will help many who plan to go to Bangkok.

Not sure if I'll write anything yet, as I keep quite busy making Music to Your Ears posts. But maybe I'll get some ideas or inspiration over the next few days.

As for Jerry B's newsletter, I was already told about it by GandhBaba. I think it's a great initiative, but just the fact that he wanted my email address turned me off. Jerry is a consummate marketer, and, while that is good for him and for those who need his help, I tend to be turned off by such strategies. So, I chose not to join his newsletter list, and pass on any rewards . That's just me. (And as you know, I don't really need his upvotes or support in my situation, as I'm doing well enough.)

Thanks for the info. I'm keeping busy, relaxing plenty, and doing quite well. Chiang Mai is now blissfully cool ... with temperatures around 27-30.

Cheers!

p.s. I just found this. I dunno if you're interested, but you may even be able to write / post on Medium ... https://tenderly.medium.com/tenderly-introduction-7ec82197cf84

I get it with all your answers, @majes.tytyty.

Most importantly - new topic - can you please go here and vote for the comment by @bxlphabet? It's vote-able until Thursday

https://steemit.com/qurator/@qurator/qurator-s-toss-up-thursday-41-free-for-all-promotion-competition#@bxlphabet/pueluo

It's a qurator contest and it's really me. My kid is gone again and I am holding the fort.

= =

I cannot believe you don't have alt-emails. I have 6 unless I am missing one. I have one that is ONLY for newsletters like jerry's. I'm subbed to maybe 700 of them. Then one for money stuff and International, personal, and one for paypal only etc!

Zoho is a good provider.

He only has 250 people in a week - just posted - so you are not taking anything away from anyone.

= =

For steemfest, please try to put one post each two weeks in your schedule and especially this one, since it is an intro post. I know you have a good thing going, but one post each 14 days should not mess you up.

For this post -

  • 100-200 words - why you love steem and how you got here
  • 100-200 words - thoughts about the trip
  • 100-200 words - What you do on your blog, especially ESL stuff

I am going to promote STEEMFEST all over our SE Asian world and I already have been told language is an issue as to why some people will not come. So I hope I can include you in my "Who posted to week 1 STEEMFest Contest" post I will do soon, so I can tell people about your work here.

I looked in to medium before and did not go. I do not remember why, so I will go check again. TY for that tip, and for all you do for me :)

Hmm, sounds easy enough. I might make a post.
Just to confirm, 300-600 words, answering the above 3 questions, will suffice?
Also, can you suggest a few relevant tags for the post?

As for Medium, I understand. I looked into it about a year ago, and even met a guy here in CM who wrote for them. He essentially stated that it was hardly worth his time.

Cheers!

Great! You have the idea, @majes.tytyty. 600 words or so would be awesome. Throw in some of your awesome photos of Thailand throughout (3-5) - does not have to be Bangkok.

Say nothing negative, except if you have some question or worry about the travel or something. You should see the terrible posts of some people dissing STEEM. Wow. Way to alienate.

Here is what they said on the entry post:

https://steemit.com/steemfest/@anomadsoul/the-road-to-steem-fest-or-planning-wanting-doubting-on-going-to-sf-write-about-it

= =

1 - Only Posts that are related to Steem Fest and related to the general: Going or not going to Steem Fest.
2 - Use the tag #roadtosteemfest and #blocktradescontest so we can all find the posts and get to know each other.
3 - You have until Sunday, July 14th to post about this topic. <<< Go as early as you can. Bigs are reading these to choose who get bigger votes. They last minute will see a flood.

The topic is very general so you're very welcome to write about this from a lot of angles, but please make it related to "Planning, wanting, doubting on attending Steem Fest"

= =

A lot of people are using that last line in some way on their titles.

You can scroll here to see what others have done:
https://steemit.com/created/blocktradescontest

So happy you will do this.

Medium would throw me of track even more that I am right now. I need to pay rent on Monday and now the STEEM I earned the week is about 25% underwater. Scrambling!
