Was Mane Really Worthy To Be The Best Africa Player of 2019???

Mane received the award for best African player of 2019 some days ago. Some people may argue that he is worthy of the award and some may disagree. The competition of the best African player was between Mane and Mahrez. I will provide some arguments that may just prove that Mahrez would have been a more worthy recipient of the award. Sit back and enjoy my arguments.

Many people will bring up the argument that Mane won the UEFA Champions League, but ask yourself this question, is UEFA Champions League for Africa or Europe?? Apart from that, did he have any individual award? How many trophies did he win last year, compared to Mahrez??? If you are objective you will see where I'm heading to.

Mane won just one trophy last season which was the UEFA Champions League. Whereas, Mahrez won 4 trophies which includes the English Premier League, Carabao Cup, FA Cup and the most important for Africa, the African Nations Cup. From this point, is clear to say, Mahrez deserves to be the best African Player of the year.

Let's look at their personal involvement for team and country from each player. Let's start with Mahrez.

English Premier League 2018/2019 season

Mahrez

  • Goals = 7
  • Assists = 5

Mane

  • Goals = 22
  • Assists = 2

English Premier League 2019/2020 season

Mahrez

  • Goals = 5
  • Assists = 7

Mane

  • Goals = 11
  • Assists = 7

UEFA Champions League 2018/2019 season

Mahrez

  • Goals = 1
  • Assists = 5

Mane

  • Goals = 4
  • Assists = 2

UEFA Champions League 2019/2020 season

Mahrez

  • Goals = 1
  • Assists = 5

Mane

  • Goals = 2
  • Assists = 2

African Nations Cup

Mahrez

  • Goals = 3

Mane

  • Goals = 3

Domestic Cup(FA Cup & Carabao Cup) 2018/2019

Mahrez

  • Goals = 4 (FA Cup = 2 & Carabao Cup = 2)

Mane

From the above details you can argue that Mane was a better player during 2019, based on his goals and assists.

But for me, I would have picked Mahrez because he won 4 trophies and because it was the year for African Nations Cup and he won it, he therefore deserves the award. Both players did very well last season.

Both players had a great year in 2019, no doubt but i'll disagree with you on who deserves it more. Mahrez might have performed well in the African Nation Cup but i wouldnt say he performed better because his country won the tournament.

In regards to the trophies won, Mahrez quite alright won four but do you think the UEFa Super Cup and Club World Cup Mane won counts for nothing?

In the aspects of individual performance for club and country Mane edges Mahrez hands down, the stats tells that. Remove Mahrez goals for City, i dont think there'll be much of a difference. But removing Mane's goal, Liverpool may not accomplished what they did as Mane scored the more crucial goals.

The awards also says best African player. On an individual level Mane had a better year, even FIFA recognized that as he made top in the Balon d'Or.

Well said. Your opinion is good and I acknowledge that fact. But to me personally, in individual performance for a team, I pick Mahrez. Why do you think, Robertson and Arnold are rated highly?? They gifted Mane goals.

Let's look at how awards were given. UEFA best player was Virgil, why? He won UEFA Champions League. Best Player in the world, Messi? Why? Because he was the best in the world. Now my point, Virgil wouldn't have won the UEFA best player if not for the Champions League. Messi should have won because he performed excellently, but he didn't win the award because there was a worthy opponent who won the UEFA Champions League. It doesn't matter if Messi was better than Virgil that year, Virgil won Champions League, hence, he is the best UEFA player of the year. Messi won the best player in the world because that is not based on any continental basis and clearly in the world, he was the best player that year.

So, Mahrez won the African Nations Cup and he played a very crucial role winning the Cup with that outstanding last minute freekick against Nigeria and many more brilliant moments in the competition. So he deserves it and his club level football wasn't bad. It doesn't matter the numbers of goals you score but what you bring to the table. Because if it was matter of goals, Virgil wouldn't have won the UEFA best player. Both players deserve to be the best African player but Mahrez deserved it more.

Lets agree to disagree. Both players were good last year but one was more instrumental for club and country than the other and you who :)
