Just last week, the Premier League matches restarted for another season, that is the 2019/20 season. So far, some teams have gone on to play two matches while others have played just one and are scheduled to play today. At the time of this review, there have been some upsets for several teams. On the other hand, a few others have carried over their brilliant performances from the previous season to this one.

Perhaps, a look at the table can give us an insight into the standings currently.

From the screenshot above taken from the SkySports page, we can see those leading the league table, and those sitting it out at the bottom. However, as the game of football is quite unpredictable, it would be ridiculous to judge what the end looks like from this week. There certainly would be a whole lot of drama and unsettling, and a number of those currently at the top may see themselves head down to the bottom.

The first-week league games saw quite some action from some prominent teams and players. It is also the same for the second-week league games. We shall take some time to look at some of these games.

Biggest Games of the Premier League so far

1. Manchester United vs. Chelsea

The game between Manchester United vs. Chelsea remains in the 1st week of the Premier League remains one of the most talked-about matches so far. It may not be unrelated to the 4-0 whitewashing of the Frank Lampard led side. I mean, one or two goals would have been much more forgivable given the fact that FIFA banned them from signing players in this transfer window.

However, four goals without a single reply almost made it seem like Eden Hazard’s move to the Spanish La Liga had brought the English club down to its knees. Rashford with a double, Martial and Daniel James were responsible for the harsh decisive knockout of the London side club. As it was Lampard’s debut as the new coach of the team, it didn’t speak well of him.

However, Chelsea will be hoping to go all out at home against Leicester City in about a few minutes. Hopefully, they can upturn the results of the last game, and go up from position 19 where they sit at the table, to somewhere much more reassuring. We’d be watching out for their performance in this match.

2. Liverpool vs. Norwich

After their glorious triumph at the Champions League last season, the Reds have yet again started on a high note. They currently lead the table with a 4 goal difference from 2nd position Arsenal. Their opener saw them turn the newly promoted Norwich over, putting 4 goals past the net and getting only one in return. Strikes by Mohammed Salah, Virgil Dijk, Divock Origi and an own goal from Grant Hanley made the difference for the Reds.

While Norwich played their possible best, they were unable to come off with anything tangible except for a consolation goal scored by Teemu Pukki in the 64th minute of the game. Unfortunately, Alisson Becker had to leave the pitch just before half time after he came down with a calf injury.

Liverpool also played against Southampton on Saturday and managed to come off with 2 goals to 1 win against their hosts. Recall that Liverpool lost out to winning the Premier League cup last season to Manchester City shy of just one point. Hopefully, they can show strength, resolve, and determination and go on to win the coveted title after 30 years of their Premier League title drought.

3. West Ham vs. Manchester City

I think Manchester City carried over their anointing from last season to this one and will once again prove to be a stumbling block to the dreams and aspirations of other clubs. Last season saw City finish the Premier League games at the top of the table with 98 points. They won 32 games, drew 2 and lost 4.

This season, City has started on a high with a 5-0 away win against West Ham. This win is so far the biggest in this season’s EPL. To crown it all, Raheem Sterling, City’s clinical finish bagged his first hat trick of the season while Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero who started the bench added the other two for the 2018/19 EPL champions.

City also featured in their 2nd league game against Tottenham which saw them bag a 2-2 draw after their last injury time finisher by Gabriel Jesus was disallowed by VAR. This decision came as a result of Tottenham’s Aymeric Laporte negligent handling of the ball during the corner that led to Jesus’s goal.

Goals for Tottenham were scored by a shot from Erik Lamela and a header by Lucas Moura after Lamela sent in a corner ball in the 56th minute. Manchester City would be smarting from this draw as they’d have been at the top of the league table if the goal had been allowed to stand. They, however, have the consolation of Sterling leading the highest goal scorer list with four goals from 2 matches.

These three for me, are the biggest games of the season so far and they all come from the Premier League first week matches. So far in week two, there has not been any game with hefty score lines. We hope Chelsea can make a turnaround and give a better fight today as they face off against Leicester City today.
