Some Simple On Site SEO Improvements for SportsTalkSocial Website

I have been encouraged by @patrickulrich progress with this blogging platform in such a short space of time. There seems to be meaningful improvements being implemented on a weekly/monthly basis which is more than certain other similar projects where the dev's have almost abandoned their projects to rot away.

As someone who performs SEO for clients as part of my day job, I'd like to recommend a few simple changes to the onsite seo in order to help encourage improvements in rankings for Google and increase inward traffic. They are not too technical but can go a long way for improving the traffic to the site over the medium and long term.

(1) H1 on Home Page

This is the simplest and most important update that should occur for SEO in my opinion. Currently for the home page H1 we have "Trending: All tags". That tells Google and others that these keywords are the main topic for the website. Not much meaning there right now is there!

Instead the H1 should read "Sports Talk Social" - the main brand of the site and preferably it should be where the current logo is in text based format. What I would recommend is to keep the current logo shapes (the dark blue and royal blue ones) then have in text alongside it "Sports Talk Social". You can wrap the whole thing in a < h1 > or have the current shapes as a background image in a style sheet. Either way I can assist if needed. So it would look something like this:

or preferably < h1 class="hometitle" >Sports Talk Social< /h1 > with the logo being applied as a css background image in a style sheet.

Then after turn "Trending: All tags" to a h2. < h2 > Trending: All tags < / h2>

(2) Home Page Meta Title

Change the meta title of the home page to "Sports Talk Social: Latest Sports News and Discussions"

(3) Tag Page Optimisations:

Meta Title

< title data-reactid="36" >Trending brighton posts — SportsTalkSocial< /title >

Currently the Meta Title in each tag page reads "Trending INSERT_SUBJECT posts — SportsTalkSocial" The Meta Title coupled with the H1 tag are crucial indicators to search engines of a pages topic. Here is my recommendation for improving it's optimisation:

For SportsTalkSocial.com these can read "Trending INSERT_SUBJECT News, Discussions, Posts - Sportstalksocial.com"

So for example if we drilled down to Everton under Football > Premier League > Everton the Meta Title should read:

"Trending Everton News and Discussions - Sportstalksocial.com"

Keywords "News" and "Discussions" are important keywords to include even more so than posts because they are common terms users search for related to what content people tend to write on this website and will collect more relevant traffic than "posts". It can also attract potential future users who may want to join in a discussion of a sport of sporting team.

Meta Description

Meta description while not as important as the Meta Title still does have an impact on on-site optimisation techniques for rankings. The current meta description doesn't change per page. It always remains as

"SportsTalkSocial is a social media platform where everyone gets paid for creating and curating content. It leverages a robust digital points system, called SPORTS, that supports real value for digital rewards through market price discovery and liquidity"

Each meta description can simply follow the Meta Title.

E.g. View the latest "Everton" news and discussions at Sports Talk Social. Join the debate and get rewarded for your efforts.
