Off to the footie with Pompey
As a Brit people may expect me to be a football fan, but I only tend to watch games in the big competitions like the World Cup. Until today I had never been to a big match, but I was in Portsmouth for a work meeting and someone suggested we go to see Portsmouth play Ipswich.
Portsmouth F.C. (aka Pompey) play at Fratton Park and are in the EFL Championship. They are near the bottom of the table with Ipswich in second place.
We needed food, but with the pubs all very busy we ended up in Domino's for some pizza. Then we meet up with the others at the Staggeringly Good Brewery for a quick drink. That is near the ground, but was not too busy. They have a dinosaur theme and my beer was called Short Arms, but Big Ambition (like a t-rex). It was rather nice.
We got into the ground not long before kickoff. Luckily we were under cover as it rained a bit.
It was a good match. There were various attempts at goals in the first 40 minutes until Pompey scored and the place went wild. The chants are really something and some were a little rude. There were some kids there. Just after that goal Pompey had a corner and scored again.
The second half was fairly frantic as Ipswich tried to score, but 2-0 was the final result with chants of 'we are staying up'. The crowd was at full capacity at just over 20,000.
There were a few yellow cards, but no major incidents. Seeing a live match is quite different to watching on TV. I enjoyed it, but will probably not be a regular at matches.
We needed to get a train back to the hotel. It was only one stop, but would be a long walk. I thought it might be an issue to get on a train with all those people, but it was not too bad.

I'm not a huge soccer fan, but I wouldn't mind going to a proper game sometime. Mostly just for the crowd and the atmosphere.

I feel similarly toward American sports. I have no interest in NFL football, and while I enjoyed playing baseball as a kid, I don't watch it on TV. I also listened to basketball on the radio while driving to see the solar eclipse. I was crossing Iowa when the 2024 NCAA women's college basketball championship occurred, and Iowa Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark was the hottest name in college sports. I do like attending the occasional Spokane Indians minor league game, so that's my only real connection to sports, and I do prefer seeing it live despite the overpriced beer and food.

I've been to other sports events like athletics, but this is a different vibe. It is quite tribal.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone

Actions speak louder than any words do especially when them words are coming from a compolsive liars

Not a big football fan either but I do enjoy the occasional life match, the vibe and atmosphere is great
It's a different vibe to other events I've been to. Some people do not hold back. It is 'only sport', but it means a lot to them.
I used to go to Southampton matches with my dad, who are big rivals of course to Pompey. You may have come across the colloquial “Scummers”; a term of endearment that Portsmouth have for Saints fans!!
These days I don’t follow the game as much as I did when I was a kid.
My mum thinks there should be just two teams, North and South! No need for so many teams!
She hates it but probably because my dad is a real connoisseur of the sport.
It is an obsession for some and those local derbies must be quite something.
They certainly are as I can recall from my teenage years! Dad had a season ticket for The Dell back then, often had VIP tickets for the box, met players etc. very good, very cool.
That must have been exciting as a kid. My dad was into rowing rather than footie, so I spent a lot of time by rivers.
It was really exciting and spotting celebrities in the crowds was another thing. We always had the same seats in the terraces.
My friend’s dad was into rowing, he was heavily involved in the Henley Regatta.
I did a bit of rowing, but was not that sporty. I trained with people who went on to the Olympics.
