Soccer coach, it can be a dirty job :)

My sons both play soccer at our local soccer club. On plays in the second team of the youth under 17 and the other plays in the youth under 15, the fourth team. The both play at our local soccer clud, it is a quiet big club with more than 1100 playing members..

When my oldest son joined the club he was only 4 years old. It was so great and fun to see such a little fellow practice.

In the early years at the club the had a short on trainers, and for those mini's (the team where my son started) they hadn't any neither. So I decided to train them together with a trainer from the club. With those little ones it is more about playing and having fun then to learn real soccer techniques and stuff.

After the mini's he went to the F'jes. Those are the younges soccer teams at a club who also play real matches. I went along with his team and started training them together with a other father, again because the club had a shortage on trainers and I (and the other father) had a lot of fun doing it.

Although we weren't realt soccer trainers we did manege to teach the kids some soccer , Hans the other father was more of a soccer coach and I arranged all the stuff around it. We did that for several years.

At the club nothing went by itself, with that I mean that as a parrent the expected a lot from you but the expectations parents had weren't met, not even close. I think it has to do with a big club who soley relies on volunteers for it's daily operations, and that there is a bif "friends of a friend" culture. If you belonged to the inner circle than you're good. When you aren't you do can have a problem. During the years I learned to manage that and work around it but it can be frustrating some time....

When the kids got older I decided not to train them anymore due to the simple fact that I think I don't have enough knowledge of the game (in tactics and technique) to teach them some real good things. So I retired my job as a coach :)

It took a whole season for the club to find new trainers for the team, and his team wasn't the only one. I couldn't understand the reason why it is so hard for a club to find decent trainers, but then again...it comes all back to volunteers...

After some years my oldest decided to become a keeper, which he still does this moment, so his (and mine) interest changed to keeper-practice. At the club they had not a real keeper-trainer so we went, besides the practices on the club, to special soccer trainers for keepers, which he loved a lot.

Over the years nothing really changed at the club, they have grown even more but the deal with the same problems and they got even a bit worse. I totally understand that when a club only works with volunteers it is difficult to get the right people on board, but with a club this big you have to have a 'board' of people with the aspiration of a multinational in stead of a small local company. At least that's my honest opinion.

Last week they posted on Facebook that they were looking for new boardmembers in different roles. although you can have your doubts if Facebook is a good medium for that :). I applied for the role of Boardmember Communication because I think a lot can be achieved with good and transparant communication. And besides that I do think that if you are unhappy with things and you are not willing to participate, you don't have the right to complain do you....

this season my son plays again in a team without a coach. One of the fathers of the group volunteered to coach them for as long as they need so they are able to play. Now the thing is that the group can't get along with him I to be honest I do understand why. He is a bit demanding to them and his way of coaching is more like a drill instructor. You notice it during the matches , the group is not motivated, bad mouthing to each other and to the coach. Things I do not want to see in a team.... I told my son that they can have a talk about it with the caoch, to see how he sees the things. so he did, but in stead of a good conversation he told my son (and others) that they had it all wrong... Well that's a point of view, but I do think they have to have a good meeting with him and with someone of the club, otherwise the team will fall apart, I am sure..

Ans like I said before, it's with great respect that he (the coach) will put his precious time into a soccer team, but you have to face reality, if something is not working... don't bother to put to much time in it...

I do think that this is common for a lot of sport clubs, but the fact that a club continues for years this way...that creates some questions don't you think :)

What is you experience with local sportsclubs of your kids or yourself... You recognize some in any of this?

Have a great evening,

Peter

The parents really can be worse than the kids most of the time. It is pretty horrible. I definitely would not want to have one of those jobs or volunteer positions!
