The Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium is a stage for the practice of football and athletics in Barranquilla, Colombia. It was inaugurated on May 11, 1986 replacing the Romelio Martínez stadium. The Metropolitan is the headquarters of Atlético Junior of the First A Category and of the Colombian National Team for their home matches for the World Cup qualifiers. The National Team has qualified five of the six times in which this stadium has hosted the qualifiers.

In the 2014 and 2015 seasons it was the headquarters of the First A Category of Uniautónoma FC and in the final of the First B 2013 against fortress and in the First B 2012 it was the headquarters of Barranquilla FC and Uniautónoma against América de Cali and on date 1 of the First B 2014 of Unión Magdalena against Cúcuta Deportivo and the Series of Promotion of the 2014 Season of Uniautónoma against Deportes Quindío and the phase 3 match of the Copa Colombia 201810 Barranquilla FC against Once Caldas

The 2015 Colombia Cup finals have been played between Atlético Junior and Independiente Santafe; 2016 between Atlético Junior and Atlético Nacional and 2017 between Atlético Junior and Independiente Medellín. You will receive the final of the Copa América 2020.

Opening.

The construction of Roberto Meléndez lasted six years, after which a grand opening was held on May 11, 1986 with a folkloric exhibition in which 5000 artists participated, a ceremony of awarding decorations to various Colombian sports personalities, the presentation of a giant ball from which 200 white pigeons came out and the celebration of an international friendly match between the Junior and the Uruguayan National Team, directed by Omar Borrás, and which was about to participate in the 1986 World Cup. 12

The match ended with the 2-1 victory of the Uruguayans, with goals from Enzo Francescoli (the first goal scored in the stadium at 62 minutes, penalty) and Jorge Da Silva; The goal of the discount, by the local team, was the work of José "Perilla" Angulo, in the second half. The first red card went to the Uruguayan player Walter Barrios at 87 minutes.

Four days later there was another friendly match between Junior and the Argentine National Team in the latter's tour for the 1986 World Cup (in which they were champions), which would end up tied at zero goals. They played among others for the Argentines Diego Maradona, Nery Pumpido, and for Junior were players like Juan Carlos Abello and Mario Coll.
