Is the NBA actually on the cusp of NOT sucking?

avatar

It has been 1 month since the epic Anthony Davis trade went down. Although I still think it may be the biggest trade in the history of the NBA, it could have been even bigger... and far worse for the NBA.

I searched "NBA Sucking" and oddly enough Andrea Bargnani came up.

Shortly after this historic acquisition, rumors started to pop up that Kawhi Leonard was considering destroying any remnants of competitive balance by joining LeBron and A.D. on the Lakers. This would result in three of the top five NBA players all playing on the same team. Due to the unselfish play style of both Leonard and LeBron, it would have been devastating for other teams in the league. It would have worked... and made the season even more boring than it has become.

Luckily Kawhi Leonard did the unthinkable and made the brave choice of striking out on his own to be the alpha dog on the other L.A. team. Although he managed to bring Paul George, another sensational two-way player with him, there is no mistake that the Clippers are Kawhi's team and George will be playing Pippin to Leonard's Jordan. In fact, that is the perfect analogy. Not since the 90s Bulls has the league seen a combination of the two best two way perimeter players on the same team.

Although Leonard's decision may very well solidify his claim as the best winner of his generation (he has already defeated two super teams while being the leader of two different franchises) there may be a more important ripple effect. Instead of choosing the easy path to a nearly assured championship, Leonard did his part to set up an incredibly wide open and potentially highly entertaining chase for the "Larry O.B." trophy.

For the first time in over ten years, you cannot mark one team as the team. Instead, many teams including The 76ers, Bucks, Celtics, Lakers, Nuggets, and Clippers all have a real shot at the title. (Please note I purposely left off the Rockets because Russel Westbrook's ego will never allow his team to win a championship... and he and Harden may actually kill each other before the All-Star break). With that much parity, it also means that many teams have a chance to win a playoff series.

This is what happens when you misspell "parity".

So this should be the best NBA season in at least a decade!

Unless...

There is one domino yet to fall. If it does, it may ruin the entire season.

You see, the NBA has the worst policy in all of sports. They allow a team to "buy out" a player's contract and then allow that player to join any team he would like. The player usually joins a super team for the league minimum salary while his previous team pays the lion share of it. The previous team saves a few million dollars while the player gets to have his cake and eat it too. With his money already secured, he can join the team that will give him the best chance to steal a Championship Ring. It is a policy that ruins competitive balance and rewards teams for cutting corners.

Who is a prime target to take advantage of this incredibly stupid policy? Well none other than the man who happens to be in charge of the union who negotiated the deal:

Chris Paul

Chris Paul: The only man in the history of the NBA who has never committed a single foul... according to him.

That's right, perennially douche bag Chris Paul can "f" this all up by demanding to be bought out by the OKC Thunder. If he is, he will be on a plane to join LeBron and A.D. in La La Land faster than you can say "banana boat".

So please Chris Paul, for the good of the game and the players you claim to represent, suck it up and stay in OKC. The playoffs will be so much better without your dirty play and having to look at your pissy crybaby face.

What's good champ! Good to have you here on Sportstalksocial. The NBA is looking great again after the hegemony of the Golden State Warriors. Teams seem to have adjusted as the way of playing game has changed a lot. I wouldn't mind watching CP3 wearing the Lakers uniform, it still may be competitive though. Lebron is aging but we can never count him out, he's the Tom Brady of basketball. Regards mate.

That is very true. The age and injury factor is tough to predict. Maybe they need a third guy in LA to compensate for those factors.

I applaud your way of describing NBA free agency.
Please post like this more cause it is fun to read and make a basketball fan explodes with laugh.
The season is couple months away I can see the shenanigans going on with all the big duos.
I wish to see a peaceful Houston Rockets team winning game and prove the world they can co-exist and share the ball.
Man! I can dream how interesting this season will be !

As a former NBA die-hard fan from the '80s and '90s, it is good to see perhaps some parity going on in the league. I have not been a fan since Jordan retired, but now with all the movement and no clear dominant team, the NBA just may be fun to watch again. Time will tell, and thank goodness I have the NFL and NHL to keep me going incase it doesnt get any better.
