If You Want Crypto to Be Fun Again, Start Playing FDF

It sure has been a while since I wrote an article about a crypto project, but this is mainly because we haven't seen any real innovation in the space for years. AMMs, lending protocols, Ve 3,3… They all got me excited, but the whole space turned into a vaporware production machine after that.

As most people in crypto, I started losing interest in every new Dapp simply because it was a recycled idea of something that already sucks. AI seemed a lot more fun, so I started exploring that space for a while, almost forgetting about crypto in the process, but then @footballdotfun dropped and crypto became cool again.

Make it sticky, but don't make it Icky

User retention in crypto Dapps is not something to brag about. People keep coming back to Dapps that make them easy money, and once the free cash stops flowing, the Dapp dies out fast, simply because the people working on it don't really care much about user experience, or just don't know how to improve retention. I'm glad that this is not the case with FDF.

This team has managed to combine football and crypto in such an amazing way that money is the last thing you think about when you play the game. It's all about points and competing with others. How well can you predict the upcoming tournament games, and how many points can you get in relation to your squad value.

It is fantasy sports on steroids and I love it. I also know others love it too because FDF has been topping a lot of charts lately.

FDF is in the top 10 in terms of revenue on Base, in front of industry giants like AAVE. When I started playing it a few months ago, I didn't really think it would kick so much ass, but here we are...

Even though it is still a relatively unknown Dapp on CT, it has generated more than $10M in revenue, and the founders didn't spend that money on a yacht, which is huge.

Complex Simplicity

In a way, it is the same as trading memecoins, but if those memecoins were tied to actual football matches and player performance, and in the end, you don't get rugged by dweebs like @orangie.

That's why crying is forbidden in the skill-based arena. If you know how to plan ahead and how to outsmart others competing for the same prize as you, you will prosper and grow your squad size in no time.
On the surface, it may seem like a whale game because there is no cap on how many shares of a player you can own (except the max supply cap), but even if they rip 100 legendary packs every week, they can only promote 3 players every 12 hours. This contains inflation rates drastically and allows you to keep up with the big dogs like @OttoSuwen , even though he will flex 50k tournament points on you every week.

Your choices are simple but very complex at the same time. You can either spread yourself too thin by betting on every available player, or concentrate your bets and pray that the football gods will have mercy on your soul.

Infinite possibilities

FDF may seem like a game, but it comes with infinite possibilities. I'll just give you one example, and let you figure out the rest.

You can make money in FDF by having patience and ignoring the game loop completely, simply by purchasing good but injured players during their absence from the pitch.
If you check my post history on X, you will see that I begged people to buy Foden shares when he was trading below $0.02. When he got back from his injury and dominated a few games, his FDF shares almost did a 10x. All you had to do was buy early and stay patient.
This is just one of many ways you can "play" the game for money, but that's not fun, so I will stop here.
