The police should definitely spend the time to better train, but at the same time, it isn't too bad that the Australian police rarely have to shoot. Though I suspect, it is going to change rapidly.
There are years where the Finnish police don't kill anyone, and they usually shoot to maim, not kill. There was an incident with a knife wielding person a few years ago who killed several people and, the police shot him in the leg. "Suicide by cop" is unlikely here.

It's definitely going to change over time. With increased financial pressure comes increased crime, and crimes escalating in severity and violence. Home invasion is a good one...Usually soft targets...I think the cops need to cowboy up a little bit, learn to shoot...And general population should take a few more steps to help themselves.
