A good old flutter is what I do ahead of all the majors. I rarely ever back the favourites because there is no value in them. McElroy at 9/1 is just value in my eyes. So I always back a few outsiders that might have a chance on winning the open. I look at many factors.
The Golf Course
The course itself is a challenging links course so the 350 yard drives will not work here. Iron and wedge play is essential. Rory's wedge play has not been up to scratch this year so 9/1 is low even if he did shoot a course record 61 here in 2005. There is pressure on Rory going into this . It is a local club of his that he knows very well. So he is expected to win. He was expected to win the US masters as well but that has eluded him also. Does Rory play well under the spotlight. I'm not quite sure. He showed his bottle at the players championship but majors are a different kettle of fish. The bombers like Dustin Johnson are too low in my opinion. The sun would want to be shining and no wind for Dustin to be a contender. Not likely.
Players current form.
It's hard not to look at Brooks Koepka around majors. He has won 4 majors in two years. But is this the golf course for him?. He is a great iron player so maybe.
I backed Sergio Garcia to win the masters 2 years ago and I won big. He was 40/1 so I love these prices. The course is in ireland so the Irish players know it like the back of their hand. I going to have a small bet on Harrington at 175/1. He has a great 1st day at the Irish Open last week. It's a long shot but who knows. Who had held the course record before Rory I ask?? Yep good old jug ears!!
I have a small bet on Shane Lowry as well as links suits him and he is talented. I bet on lowry for every major so I am not going to leave him out of my betting this time. This bet is a non calculated bet and I should not even mention it. I just really like him. 70/1. A fiver should suffice.
The Last 4 Majors and PGA wins
Louis Oosthuizen has been runner up the last 3 majors. 50/1. Not a bad each way. John Rahms love affair with Ireland after winning the Irish Open for the second time in 3 years continues. He loves links golf and this could be his week! He is even looking forward to eating in one of his favourite restaurants.
Who Will Miss The Cut Bet.
One of my friends is a miserable bastard who only bets on who will miss the cut at majors. He is an avid golf watcher and his knowledge from watching the golf week in and week out puts him ahead of the bookies when it comes to players form. He cleans up with this bet every major and last haul was 2500 for a 5 x accumulator which included a Jordan Spieth in the list. I did a couple of these myself and I have to say if you know your golf like the likes of @niallon11 then this could be the bet for you. Half the American field hate links. Throw in Tiger who has bearly been seen and everyone knows something is seriously wrong and you got yourself a nice little accumulator.
Who will miss the cut prices are below.
So that's it. Best of luck. I really do think having a flutter really does enhance your experience watching a major. I was standing on the couch shouting at the TV for Garcias putt 2 years ago at US masters to net me a cool 1000 quid. Let's home Lowry does the same this year.
