A Proper Beer Snake

This is in Winnipeg during a Blue Bombers game and they are kind of impressed with what they have done with their empty beer cups. The authorities at the ground were concerned with peoples safety when plastic cups were being thrown around. Bit pathetic really when you consider how much is being consumed and they are worrying about cups being thrown around. How about everyone getting home safely afterwards?

Beer snakes have been going for years and years since spectators were banned from bringing in their own 24 beers maximum limit in the early 1990's. Sporting venues that allowed beer consumption saw that there was too much revenue being lost and quickly put a stop to this practice.

In 2007 a world record was set for the longest beer snake at the WACA cricket ground in Australia. It reached a length of 23 m, but that was only a baby snake for what was to come 6 years later.

Love the advert in the background about drink driving. No wonder the Australian Cricket team has had beer sponsors backing them for years and years as it is good business for them.

In 2013 during a one day match between Australia and Sri Lanka at the Sydney cricket Ground the record was literally smashed. The match had a rain interruption of two hours and the crowd got bored so they drank and built two snakes on different sides of the ground. The fans had their own game and the aim was for the two snakes to meet and form one big one.The snakes finally met to a standing ovation and huge applause from the 20 000 spectators. The snake was more than 175 m long and if you have seen the plastic cups stacked it would literally equate to 10's of thousands of sold beer pints.

Feed the snake, feed the snake, feed the snake!

For environmental reasons and to stop the snake, they don't sell disposal cups at cricket grounds in the UK anymore. You have to put a £1 deposit down on a reusuable plastic cup. Spoil sports!

That makes sense with the fee for the cups and going green. It kind of added to the fun of things.

I agree. You are a seasoned drinker so I am sure you would have added some extra cups to the snake.

Holy cow, that is a lot of beer cups! I guess I shouldn't be that surprised, those Canadians can really put it away. I couldn't figure out what it was at first.

Amateurs compared to the Aussies though as that record will never be beaten.
