I just did a half-marathon... and i never thought I could do that

I'm not trying to brag too much, but seriously, doing a half marathon at least to me is a really big accomplishment and one that I never would have thought myself capable of but i did do it and it was actually more difficult than a regular half-marathon because mine was off road.

I don't look at actifit report cards and I don't really expect anyone to look at this either but i am proud of it because about 2 years ago I couldn't run to the end of my street and back without a breather and on Sunday I did this, plus the terrain was NOT flat, it was, as the picture above might suggest....a bit off-road.

It was all trails like that and I tell you, this is exactly what i need because if you give me a street and tell me to run 20 km I will give up in the first couple of km's. I hate that crap.

Give me a path and some decent scenery on the other hand and I can carry on for a very long time and that is precisely what I did.

There were 60 of us that started this run and there were 2 safety and "bail-out" stops. Only 38 of us finished because the terrain was mountainous and well, i guess it was hot.

38 finished the entire trail and I was the 5th person to cross that finish line. It hurt and continued to hurt for at least a day afterwards but I am glad I did it.

The first time I cleared a half marathon playing #ddr, I thought the exact same thing. It's crazy what we're capable of, isn't it?

Unbelievable man!!

How far you have come in such a short time is a testament to what we can do to improve ourselves. The fact that you can not only do something that hard, but are competitive and in the top 5 speaks more directly about your spirit and determination.

Congrats on another great accomplishment. Love hearing the journey and adventure stories and so glad to have met you on this awesome blockchain!

there were times during this run that i learned a lot about my breathing and realized when i was damn-near hyper-ventilating myself that it was actually my legs that were not cooperating and not so much my lungs. It wasn't easy and those peeps that do full marathons... well, I admire them because i was almost about to collapse at the end of this half-one and couldn't imagine doing another 22k after that.

Yes indeed!

I learned the same thing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. People always say "remember to breathe" and you believe them but it doesn't help. What helps is technique and having it built into your subconscious/automatic things you do.

The game changer for me was when our lead instructor said something like, "It is not the breathing in you should concentrate on. It is the breathing out. You exhale all the spent air and it badly needs to be replaced when you are exerting yourself. Your body will automatically handle the breathing in." Makes so much sense as even mindless babies will breathe in.

It has helped so much and I hope that little nugget of wisdom helps you breathe even better next time.

You have come along way from a beer swilling jogger lol. The next one will be easier if you ever decide to do another one. I suppose if you start a new chapter in Vietnam you will make others look bad and will have to refrain from showing everyone what you are capable of.

i'm concerned about my ability to exercise in Danang because a big part of why i didn't exercise when I lived in the south was humidity.... and Danang is humid as crap.

It might also be because i wasn't running at all then.... and now i do... we'll have to see once that time comes. :)

That is awesome. You are truly an inspiration. This past Summer my wife and I climbed a mountain. It was a small mountain, but I tell you what I was so winded by the time I got to the top. My wife could have made it, but she decided to stay with her friend who needed a rest. I'd like to go back there one day and bring my wife all the way to the top. I'd also like to compare and see if I am as out of breath as I was this past time. I am hoping that by the I will be in much better shape! Congrats on this awesome accomplishment!

Congratulations, I am glad too that you did it, It indeed is a good achievement in respect of your health. I could relate to you when you mentioned about a decent path and scenery instead of road for running.
Keep flourishing!

Well done @gooddream - Great accomplishment! I'm on the same line as you, running on streets bores the crap out of me. But with this scenery I could imagine doing it (prob not a half marathon tho :D).

At what time did the run start?

it started around 1:30, i don't remember exactly but it was timed so that people wouldn't end up in the dark because a lot of people were walking a lot of it and some of the older folks walked all of it.

It's really quite crazy. Not because of the heat or humidity or whatever.. but for the reason these trails, you talk about every so often, are uneven and not at all groomed. A short run I can understand, but a half marathon??!! By the end your tired, legs are like noodles and one wrong plant of the foot and your done in. That would be a long painful walk out of the jungle run. I'm jealous of this post, because you are making me thing of when exactly it was, the last time I did something strenuous that also made my proud of myself.

Way to go! You deserve to be proud of this accomplishment :-)

Guessing there was no beer at the end of this one..maybe not until much later? hehe

Fantastic, man! I have been aclimating myself to running as well. It has been doing wonders for my general health and blood pressure.

I think I'd love to make a half-marathon goal myself. Thanks for the inspiration
