Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is hoping that he and the team are still in a position to compete for the big trophies when their defender Virgil Van Dijk returns from the knee injury he suffered in the match against Everton. Liverpool will not put a date on, but it looks like close to a year time on the sidelines for the Dutchman.

At the same time, Henderson urges his teammates to step up and fight even harder in Van Dijk's absence.

For him personally, it is of course a huge downturn, but on behalf of the team, it is also a huge loss. I'm sorry on his behalf and this is where you should be there for each other. I want to be there for him as much as I can and I'm sure the rest of the team will do the same. But I am sure he will return even stronger and in the meantime we must make sure to win as many matches as possible and thus bring us into a situation where we are at the forefront when he returns, says Jordan Henderson to the club's official website.

The next challenge for Liverpool is Wednesday's Champions League clash against Ajax and then we have to see if they can do without their defensive general.
