La Liga club left the pitch during the match due to accusations of racism
Unfortunately, racism shows its ugly face all too often in the world of football. On Sunday night, this sad topic became a topic again as Valencia defender Mouctar Diakhaby left the pitch with his team-mates in a league match against Cadiz. Diakhaby was reportedly subjected to racist insults by Cadiz 'Juan Cala.
30 minutes into the game, a scuffle developed as players from both sides clashed following a tussle in the center of the field. Diakhaby, however, seemed extra upset and was held back by his teammates. He explained to the judge that Cala had spoken racistly towards him. Shortly after, he left the field with the rest of the Valencia players. After fifteen minutes, the team came on the field again and the match was resumed - but without Diakhaby, who was replaced after the episode.
We need look no further than December to find another episode of racism in top European football. In the Champions League match between PSG and Basaksehir, you could hear on TV pictures the match referees calling the Turkish club's assistant coach 'negro', ie negro, which also ended with an emigration from the field during the match.
What was said to Diakhaby during the match is not yet known.
