English Football League Derby vs Charlton Preview

On the 30th of December 2019 (Monday night), Derby will be going head to head against Charlton in what will be their last championship encounter for the year 2019. As the year is coming to an end, it’s almost expected that both teams will be looking for a victory against their opponent to conclude the playoffs for the year. But while we expect both teams to deliver top-notch performance on Monday night, Derby’s inability to win a league game since the 3rd week of November may have them at a disadvantage during the game. But then again, things aren’t so different for 18th placed Charlton Athletic, who sits 22 points below the current leaders of the championship league games, Leeds United.

If there was ever any hope of these two teams winning the championship title for the 2019/2020 competition, that ship has long sailed. Now, with the championship title far from their grasp, they battle to earn a better position on the table. But, as has been the case for Derby for the greater part of the 2019/2020 payoffs, they may be heading into this battle with wetted gloves.

Recent Stats

This season has been a season of struggle for Cocu’s men, as most of their league matches ended with them wearing a frown. On top of that, Derby has had its fair share of injuries this season. Although we expect Tom Huddlestone (former Hull and Tottenham Mid-fielder) and center-back Matt Clarke back in action on Monday, they may not be enough against Charlton’s horde. Besides, Derby will be heading into this championship clash without Tom Lawrence, who got suspended on boxing day following his 10th yellow card in twenty-two games. Also, they’ll be without Wayne Rooney, Derby’s newly acquired mid-fielder who is yet to prove his worth to the team or make a debut.

On the other hand, Krystian Bielik’s replacement for the boxing day match, Max Bird, may yet again feature on the playing field with his cohorts. Keep in mind that this young chap delivered an excellent performance on the 26th, where he earned Cocu’s accolades. Given a second chance, he may prove a dangerous weapon against Charlton’s aggressive defenders.

What to expect

Like Derby, Charlton has suffered a glum couple of months, mostly because of the gruesome injuries suffered by teammates. However, they experienced a change in fortune in the head to head against Bristol on boxing day, where they finished the game in a 3-2 win. With this newly gained confidence, we expect that they’ll be going to Pride Park Stadium, a much stronger team.

On the other hand, Charlton has failed consistently to deliver a double over derby or win a match in Derby’s home court. At least, not since their early ‘80s campaign. Now, battling against a struggling and weakened Derby, Charlton will be looking to rewrite history by ending the game in a win.

This prediction may not be so far-fetched, as Charlton’s last four away matches have ended with at least one goal to their credit.
