Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has admitted that Pep Guardiola's decision was a turning point in his career.
"A central change from the right wing to the spearhead under Pep Guardiola was a big turning point," Messi said during a documentary about his career, Lionel Becomes.
"I never had a hard time changing my central position, because I was an outspoken striker in junior and youth teams."
"My first game in this new position was against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, a confrontation I will never forget."
"Guardiola called me and told me we would play differently with my appearance as an open spearhead, because he wants to create a midfield intensity and control the ball," he said.
"This change was a big surprise especially for Real Madrid, because they didn't expect it, it was a completely different way from our games all season."
"It made a big match better than Samuel Eto'o and Henry. It was a historic victory in the opponent's court," he said.
