Nigeria 1-0 Tunisia: We Got Our Consolation!

STAT ATTACK: Nigeria has never lost a third place play-off

We did everything right, and we pressed the AZ-5 button but unlike Chernobyl, the reactor core didn't explode 😁. We came into this match against the backdrop of a shocking loss to Algeria in the dying minutes. This put alot of pressure on the team and they couldn't afford another loss. They were simply disciplined throughout this match.

Yes, Tunisia missed a couple of chances and we equally did. The match started on high as we strung beautiful passes in the first two minutes, penetrating the Tunisian defence until we got a great start, with a goal from Odion Ighalo. That goal gave us alot of confidence and dictated our play onward. We did very well to keep them at bay throughout the first half, commanding the midfield and going for the kill when the opportunity presents itself. It was all going according to plan.

Tunisia's first shot on target which came in the 56th minute was kind of a 'we-are-not-asleep' warning and it marked the beginning of heart-in-throat moments for Nigeria. Of course, we were able to deal with them but we didn't get off easy. Odion Ighalo, Our main man, who scored the only goal in the match that saw us snatch the third spot came down with an injury, it was sad for him but it wasn't shocking. He has had a great work rate all through Nigeria's matches and he is currently the leading goalscorer of the competition. He may as well go on to get the golden Boot. Ever since Rasheed Yekini (1994), no player has ever scored 5 goals in the AFCON competition until Odion Ighalo (2019).

Tunisia were the worst hit in the competition but it doesn't matter. On paper, they are happier than teams other than the top 3. Nigeria, however, got their Consolation, a way to get off a disappointing defeat and go home with at least, a medal. They were decorated, they were happy and they rejoiced with the medals dangling off their necks. Algeria and Senegal, the top guns go head to head on Friday with both teams looking to settle for nothing less than the top spot. Well, how would it be? interesting I must say. Objectively; Algeria, are in a better position to win this.
