My Actifit Report Card: October 20 2019

Hi everyone. I hope you've all had a good day. I definitely had a really great and hyperactive day. I went to church, as usual, danced a lot and socialized a lot hence my relatively high Actifit step count. I deliberately made efforts to move around the church, climbing up and down the staircases and walking around the perimeter. There is no law against keeping fit as one serves God yeah? Definitely not! In the process of meeting and greeting people, I got to speak to a lady who happens to be having a rather rough time with her husband. She wants a separation from him as a divorce might be too much to handle within their Christian and cultural contexts. I had no wise words of advice for her though. I could only stand and listen to her tale of woes, wondering what went wrong with such a lovely couple.

It is always baffling to see people who have loved each other for years break up after one or two years of marriage. Is this to say that the years the spent courting was spent in vain? Was it possible that the truth about who they truly were didn't show? It is my understanding that the courtship aka dating period is for the man and the woman to understand each other and accept each other for who they are. They spend time together in order to get used to each other's character traits, personality, habits and all those little things that tend to slip past one if one is not watchful.

If despite a reasonable length of courtship/dating, couples still break up their marriages after a short while, it means that the courtship ritual of the human race is either faulty or not a necessary prerequisite for a functional and healthy marriage. Or should we assume that the couple focused on the wrong things and the wrong cues and that somehow caused them to ignore the signs? Could it be that the lady said to herself, "I'm getting too old and very soon menopause would come knocking on my door and then I won't be able to have any kids?" Could she have been thinking that her man's faults were not so bad and that she could cope with them especially because she wasn't ready to start all over again with someone else?

The guy, on the other hand, might have thought, "She is beautiful and homely. We attend the same church, she is financially independent and we are sexually compatible. I had better marry her before someone comes and puts a ring on her finger". Do these criteria suffice when the inexplicable pressures begin in the marriage? Would all these options be what a couple needs to protect their marriage from the different influences and problems they would face? I bet you must be expecting me to proffer answers to these questions but I'd rather leave it here and allow you contemplate them on your own. Is there something vital missing from the courtship system or are all these simply due to the human factor? Weighty thoughts for a Sunday yeah? Ikr!
