AFL Finals week 1 wrap-up

As my team, the Essendon Bombers just scraped into the AFL Finals in 8th position, I was really looking forward to being part of the September action. For those not familiar with Aussie Rules Football, the AFL has a unique Finals system with the top 8 sides at the end of the season qualifying. In the first week of the Finals, the bottom four sides play off against each other (5th VS 8th, and 6th VS 7th), with the losers getting knocked out, and winners progressing to the second week, where they will play off against the losers from the top 4.

The top 4 sides meanwhile play off against each other, with 1st VS 4th and 2nd VS 3rd. The winners progress directly through to the 3rd week of the finals, with the losers getting a second chance in week 2 against the winners from the bottom 4.

Results from the first week of the AFL Finals

Unfortunately, Essendon was knocked out in The first game of the Finals by the far better side on the night, the West Coast Eagles. Congrats @michealb on your team getting through. The other side that got knocked out were the Western Bulldogs who were in form, but were outplayed by the GWS Giants.

The Eagles will play against the Geelong Cats, and the Giants will face off against the Brisbane Lions next week. Both the Richmond Tigers and Collingwood Magpies pulled off upsets to qualify directly into week 3 of the finals.

So there you have it, we're down to the final 6! Which team do you think will take out this year's AFL premiership? Let me know your prediction in the comments below.
