North versus South

The Greek football league has never been an example of stability, but this time things are going completely wrong. A complete war has broken out, where politics is interfering with the sport, and supporters can't take it anymore. They even demand the resignation of the minister of sports of Greece.
The reason for that is as always, the fight between the clubs from Athens (South) and the clubs from the North.

PAOK at home against Olympiakos

The beginning

Last year PAOK Thessaloniki became champions of the Greek league after breaking a hegemony of 30 years of clubs from Athens winning the Greek Super League, with AEK Athens, Panathinaikos and Olympiakos. The last time an other team became champions was in 1988 with Larissa.
This win by PAOK wasn't really welcome by most politicians, that are openly fans of Olympiakos Piraeus. So a reason had to be found to interfere with the league. And they did find one. PAOK, that is again in the race for the title together with Olympiakos suddenly got relegated from the league because the owner supposedly is the owner of two clubs, PAOK and Xanthi. That is against the rules, and they both got relegated by a newly voted law, designed by the minister of sport.

Of course the PAOK and Xanthi supporters were furious and they went to the streets with some very violent protests and demanded the resignation of the minister of sport. They are also threatening with a separation of the country into North and South. Other politicians got worried and decided to change the law once again, and PAOK and Xanthi were reïnstated in the league. But, the minister had one more rabbit up his sleeve, PAOK received a penalty of six points, which gives the rivals of Olympiakos the red carpet to win the league... For sure to be continued.
