Liverpool have a UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea on Wednesday but it's fair to say that the Premier League is likely to be the priority for Jurgen Klopp this season.

With that in mind, Liverpool will travel for their first away game in the Premier League on Saturday and will face off against Southampton.

Form Guide

Southampton

Southampton got off to a bumpy start in the Premier League this season, losing 3-0 away from home to Burnley.

Looking back to the 2018/19 season, Southampton finished in 16th place on 39 points. The team scored 45 goals in the league, an average of 1.18 goals per game. They also conceded 65 times, an average of 1.71 goals per game. In their final 5 games of the season, Southampton lost 2 and drew 3.

Liverpool

Liverpool started the Premier League season well with a 4-1 victory over newcomers Norwich at Anfield.

Last season, Liverpool finished 2nd in the Premier League on 97 points. Klopp's team scored 89 times in the league, an average of 2.28 goals per game. They conceded just 22 times, an average of 0.56 goals per game. In their final 5 games of the season, Liverpool won all 5.

Head to Head

In the previous 10 meetings between the clubs, Liverpool won 5, Southampton won 3, and there were 2 draws. However, Southampton have failed to beat Liverpool in the last 5 games between the clubs.

Pre- Match Analysis

Southampton

Southampton supporters will be disappointed with a loss to start their Premier League season. After a poor run of form at the end of last season, there would have been hope that the team could change its fortunes and push for a higher placed finish this time around. Of course, that could still happen but with this game against Liverpool next weekend and another tough match against Manchester United later in the month, they could quickly find themselves lagging behind the pack.

Southampton managed just 3 shots on target against Burnley and simply weren't clinical enough when it mattered. If they're going to have any chance against Liverpool, they'll need to take whatever chances fall to them. With Alisson injured for this game, there may be an opportunity for Southampton to test Adrian in the Liverpool goal.

However, as Burnley managed to score 3 goals from just 4 shots on target against them, Southampton will need to find a way to be more solid at the back. Liverpool's front 3 have the ability to make it a bad day for them if they're not able to do this.

Liverpool

With Manchester City and Tottenham both winning their first league games of the season, Liverpool will be looking to make sure that they don't fall behind in gameweek 2. On paper, this should be a fixture that Liverpool expect to win, but there will be no room for complacency.

As this is Southampton's first home game of the season, the crowd are likely to be right behind their team. Liverpool could quieten them down with an early goal but it could become difficult if they allow Southampton into the game.

Alisson will be a big miss to this team but Liverpool should have enough in defence to keep chances for Southampton to a minimum. Mane is likely to start alongside Firmino and Salah so it's business as usual in the forward line. Liverpool should look to play a fast-paced game and get Robertson and Alexander-Arnold on the ball in the wide forward positions. With the firepower they have up top, Liverpool will get chances and simply need to be clinical.

Prediction

There are very few Premier League games that can be considered easy these days but Liverpool should have far too much for Southampton here who have been in terrible form for quite some time now.

Odds

  • Liverpool to win at odds of 1.44 is quite generous here.
  • Over 2.5 goals at 1.69 is also of interest considering Liverpool's firepower and Southampton's leaky defence.

You have put in a lot of efforts to come up with this impressive, very revealing thoughts about the strengths and weaknesses of the respective teams. It's an eye opener indeed. Thanks

Cant see the saints getting anything from this . The win by more than 4 goals bet has me in profit this season already

It was a close one in the end - what happened to the goalkeeper? A cool get-together of a German-Austrian manager duel. Glad Liverpool made it though.
