South African bowlers bowled very well in the first innings and restricted England to 269. Most of the English batsmen got starts but most of them couldn't capitalize. Ollie Pope was the only light of hope but he ran out of support. He remained unbeaten on 61 runs.

South Africa didn't start well as they were tattering at 40 for the loss of three wickets with their skipper back in the hut. Elgar and Dussen then started to rebuild and South Africa were in a great position to get a first innings lead. However, that was not to be as the partnership of 117 runs was broken and England kept picking up wickets at regular intervals. At the end of the day's play, South Africa were 215 for the loss of 8 wickets trailing by a margin of 54 runs.

Elgar and Dussen scored half centuries but none of them went on to make a triple figure score. Philander is still on the crease and he can hurt England with his run scoring ability.
